Great book, but it was not mentioned in the description that the paperback book is black and white. There are descriptions in the text that want you to look at ‘blue lines’ on the accompanying diagrams, and you are left wondering which line would that be because all the lines are black! The hardback probably is colour and that’s probably the only difference which raises the price by about twice that of the paperback ! Great book if you have some basics of pattern drafting, worth the price!

I’ve been using this to draft patterns on Seamly2D which takes some practice and concentration. The price was fantastic, but the diagrams are in black and white, where as originally they should have been in colour. I feel like I will be using this for quite some time to come. I’ve used the Metric Pattern Cutting for years but never actually drafted my own blocks from scratch. The clothes are never the height of fashion in these books, but fashions change, it’s the techniques that are important. Techniques do not change. I find it strange that some complain about the fashions, but I assume that they are just young or lack design skills.

This is a brilliant book, well worth the money. I would recommend it for advanced beginners (those with a bit of sewing experience) as it does take things from first principles but there may be a few stumbling points along the way.
I’m an intermediate sewer myself and this book answers all my prayers as it really does show you all the ways to build any item from a basic pattern set.
5* for the book content, but the other reviewers are right – the cover is really flimsy for such a weighty book. My recommendation is to buy a plastic cover (like they put on library books) to help protect it, and increase its longevity. It’ll only cost a couple of quid and will help the book last much longer.
Overall, a must have purchase!

This has been both a source of fountain like knowledge and mild frustration due to a lack of personal knowledge. It is a Hefty book covering everything you can think of regarding patternmaking.
My difficulty is as a new sewer I wanted to understand the “engineering” of RTW patterns V Custom Fit how ro grade and draw them, make adjustments etc etc and like so many new sewers I purchased a number of books on the subject…but it has taken till now, having worked through the other books that I fully understand and appreciate the sheer volume of quality information in this book.
I read one review saying that one lady used this book as her “Degree” as there was nowhere local enough offering courses of equal depth….and I couldn’t agree more….this book contains everything you could ever want to know about Patternmaking and would see any aspiring seamstress through everything they would learn on a degree course….plus a useful source of reference for the future.
The DVD however offers little incentive as it is just a sales pitch for drafting software…..It would be nice if it had included PDFs of the measurement tables ….as is so often the case measurements change overtime and being such a bulky book makes it difficult to copy the pages, despite there being a blank set at the end of each chapter…..I actually resorted to cutting one out of the book.

Detailed descriptions of techniques and easy to follow

Discovered Helen Joseph-Armstrong’s book through You Tubers using it as their reference for drafting slopers. I wanted more detail than the videos could provide and this book is packed full of the geometry and principles of pattern drafting along with self-evaluation tests. It has far more detail than I had anticipated. Very much looking forward to using this book to teach myself pattern-making.
This is the Indian Subcontinent version adapted from the United States edition.

First, The basics were good staples but the blocks are based on a b cup, and if you’re drafting from scratch from diff measurements I think there should be much more thought and effort into changing bust size, drafting for diff shapes. At beginning it shows all the shapes like hourglass and pear, shoulder and back shapes but the actual drafting uses a basic block and doesn’t cover these shapes at all. Second, Like another reviewer said, wow there are some old fashioned looks that don’t stand the test of time or aren’t useful such as the children’s clown costumes (Shudder). After I got it and was deciding whether to return it, I researched more reviews and found many saying that after sewing up, the blocks aren’t quite right something is skewiff . 3rd, my computer did not recognise the dvd as a dvd. I tried in several drives until it played, did not seem useful. I returned it.

I will recommend this book for anyone going into fashion business. It’s must have for new student and those who wants to upgrade their skills in fashion and design. This book covers the whole anatomy section you need to make for human body fashion and design. Although I’ve not read the whole book but I learnt a lot from the little I have read. If someone has this book and the other one for draping from this same author as reference books, I don’t think there is need to buying more books on fashion and design as these two books cover it all. I regretted I bought some other books I got on fashion and design as it is not necessary if you have the two books I’m writing about. I’m like a glue to the ‘pattern making for fashion and design’ as I can’t stop digesting the information from this book. This book is enough if you don’t have time to go to fashion school and if you can be committed to read. Thank you Helen Joseph Armstrong for taking your time to share others your knowledge. My plan is to open a fashion studio but I’ve been nervous to go ahead. However, with the little I have studied from this book I think I have gain my confident and the sky is my limit. Hopefully, towards late next year if I’m alive I should be confident enough to lunch my fashion studio. Thanks once again Helen. Kike
