Two screenwriters once walked into a Hollywood producer’s office and said three words ‘Jaws in space.’ Those three words won them the contract for the blockbuster movie Alien.

The ability to pitch well is essential for all writers, directors and producers in cinema and TV. Strong pitching skills will accelerate your career not only helping you sell your projects, but also developing them in the first place, focusing on what makes a story work, clarifying character and plot and working more successfully with industry collaborators.

Purchased this book at a book festival from the author himself after hearing him on a panel. One of the best purchases I’ve made. This book makes you really stop and think before you get too carried away with your ideas.

You’ve completed your script. What’s next? A deep dark chasm opens in front and one usually loses heart to keep going and further. I had that problem before and I still face it on a regular basis. This book, however, provides light at the end of the tunnel, saving the bold scriptwriter years of moving in circles and learning the craft the hard way. It is also a very honest book – it does not promise success, but instead teaches in detail how to do the right way everything that could be possibly done, in order to avoid technicalities ruining YOUR fabulously written script:)))

The layout was a little confusing and I wish there was more discussion of TV versus film, but overall a useful and rare explanation of pitching essentials.

I found “Jaws In Space” an invaluable resource whilst researching the best techniques for pitching. It’s full of tips, not just for the regular filmmaker/screenwriter, but also for those interested in documentaries. The book really helps to prepare you for that all important pitch meeting, with many examples of loglines and how to create them – and I’d say there is much to pick up from this book even if you aren’t pitching. If you are just starting out, writing a story, then I feel it’s approach to creating a logline also helps in the early stages of creating your story. Even the concept of having a 1 page treatment could be followed BEFORE you even write your story, and then expand on it. So my view is that it’s an essential tool for the overall creative writing process! What I also like about this book is that it gives you a comprehensive insight into how producers and executives THINK, allowing you to potentially cater to what they are looking for. Whilst I am only at the beginning of the journey myself, I feel much more prepared for what lies ahead. It’s also a book I expect to refer back to regularly for reference. By far the easiest 5 star rating I’ve awarded. Look forward to reading more insights from Charles Harris. Well done!
