I don’t know what I was expecting but this book was not it. The quality of the illustrations are very good just not for what I wanted to use them for.

The history of the Cuna people is brief and there is little discussion of the symbolism of the designs which are in black and white. …rather like a children’s colouring book!!!!! There are no modern photos of the Cuna wearing Molas and the historical photos while interesting are difficult to see. Could get as much info in a Tourist Brochure. Not worth buying.

I’m very pleased with this book. Short and simple, it gives a brief history of the development of the Mola technique by the Cuna people in the Panama area; followed by 45 line drawings representing actual Cuna designs. Each one near fills the A4 page, and is labelled with the subject of the design in Cuna and English, and the actual size of the original. Alas, all the drawings are in black and white, though there are colour pictures of 10 of the Molas on the inside covers, and a list of colours commonly used by Cuna people.
Overall it’s an excellent resource for textile artists interested in Central American design, and a fine starting point for developing one’s own reverse applique designs. Good value for a modest price!
