Sometimes you order something and when it arrives you get that nagging feeling that you’ve not managed to get real value for money.
Very rarely something is delivered and you actually feel quite angry that you’ve been ripped off.
This is definitely an example of the latter. I paid £4.95 for this ‘book’ (it’s really at most a leaflet) and it leaves me frustrated that ABRSM would so readily milk its students. Especially since I suspect that the target market for a grade 2 book of scales is the parents of young children.
Why isn’t this a brief appendix to the book of pieces?
Oh and note that this book is for exams ‘from 2021’. Another version on sale online is already outdated (definitely don’t buy that one!). How long, I wonder, until the scales get revised again and render this one defunct as well??

My child’s piano tutor asked us to purchase this one as she had an older version and was concerned that the exam might use different scales and Arpeggios.
Turns out that the old ones are still being used, this one contains additional ones yes BUT they are not used for the exam so if you have an earlier version then this will be a waste of money.
However, I have not and will not be sending for refund as there is no fault with the book and it is not the sellers fault. I guess I should research into what the new edition has but I expected my child’s tutor to be able to do that. Clearly she likes the easier option of asking us to make the purchase for her to find out….

If you resent paying for the grade specific scale books, you don’t actually need to buy it. Stop complaining about it. The list of scales you need for each grade is at the back of the performance pieces. I still have my old ABRSM scales book from 20 years ago and use that. If you didn’t take ABRSM exams yourself, then you can buy the manual of scales, broken chords and arpeggios book (£12.95 at the time of writing), and it will cover all your piano exam needs. All the scales are probably in the grade 8 book too and that’s a bit cheaper.

……. works out a nearly a POUND a page – outrageous !! Unfortunately comes across as ABRSM (a charity with a virtual monopoly on music exams) fleecing “students” for as much as possible.
Nil stars would be more apt.
Get Alfreds book on scales and get a decent book !!!!

Good price and arrived next day.

As usual, an outrageous rip off from ABRSM, but my real gripe is the cover: why so similar – almost identical to the 2019-20 syllabus? sO confusing.
A star awarded for finally getting rid of those pointless and difficult Broken Chords
