Out of respect for Gordon Ramsay, whose talent and dedication I truly appreciate, I give 4 stars. I think the book itself deserves only 3 though. I would have expected it to contain more recipes (and less glossy pages) but most importantly, accessible recipes. Many ingredients are not that easy to find and seem rather pricey. The title indicates ‘home cooking’, so one would expect a more traditional, or at least relaxed approach.
It doesn’t mean the book lacks positive aspects. Au contraire! It is refreshing to see the chef’s creativity when adapting international recipes and giving them his own twist. Moreover, I like and find very useful the technical tips and comments scattered throughout the book. Besides, perhaps the disadvantage of cooking recipes that otherwise are not easily accessible can turn into an advantage: who can complain they’re eating (almost) luxury food? I can’t think of many!
To sum up, I’d say that if you want a consistent, A to Z cookbook maybe this is not the most recommended one, however it makes for a nice addition to your inspiration arsenal.

I’m giving it 4 stars as its a cookbook and emphasis should be given to the recipies obviously, but…
Watching the show, i fell in love with most of the recipies, the way they were presented, the intructions and final result presentation from Gordon. The whole set up of the show, gave you a homey, warm feeling, wanting to rush to the kitchen and try everythng.
Opening the book though, i got disappointed by the presentation. it’s a cold, modern, minimal book that has nothing to do with the show. White pages, dull photos. the book has no life and the pages weren’t given any love! design wise..
for example… cinnamon eggy bread with quick stewed apple. anyone that saw the episode have seen the result Gordon presented. i was looking for apples to make it on the spot! The picure in the book though is far far away from the show result! same with smoky bacon sweetcorn and potato soup. in the show it was a thick, creamy soup, in the book its a white watery soup. and many many more. I just want to tell Gordon TAKE PHOTOS DURING THE SHOW, don’t present me something completely different afterwards.
I own the Jamie Oliver book as well, “Comfort Food” and you can see the big difference in the end result of the book. I don’t compare the chefs, i admire and follow both for years and that’s why i have their books. I compare books! Books, even cookbooks, tell a story, and give you emotions. This one NOT.
I wil still try the recipies, i will still watch the episodes but the book itself was a big disappointment.

So many cookbooks sit on the shelf as monuments to kitchen aspirations rather than as a resource that makes your cooking better in the real world! This isn’t one of those. As someone who can use the odd colourful word myself but was unimpressed by Ramsey’s apparently aggressive tv persona for years I’ve recently been converted. This is a great cookbook. It’s eminently practical and extremely clearly written and formatted. The recipes are practical, the methods are clearly laid out and ( unlike many cookbooks that look fancy and are heavily promoted ) they work! An additional benefit is Ramsey’s habit of explaining WHY as well as what and when. This develops skills and understanding for the home cook in tandem with increasing confidence etc. The recipes work and the results are delicious! 100%!
