Eric “Winkle” Brown’s life is one of the most impressive and even inspiring ones that I have read in a long time. His skill and courage are worthy of the highest praise, doubly so given the circumstances. The number of times he escaped death by the skin of his teeth is frankly astonishing. Paul Beaver does an excellent job as writer, combining the technical, historical and human aspects of Captain Brown’s wartime service, and this book is an excellent tribute to one of the greatest pilots of the Second World War.

Having sat through one of Eric’s talks in the past, his power of recall is absolutely extraordinary. This book tell’s his whole life story, and that too, is equally extraordinary. Sadly no longer with us, but an excellent book for anyone who loves flight and flying.

This is a great book, but it does it expose some deep flaws in this great man, that I kind of wish I didn’t know about. Fascinating all the same, very well written and researched as well as being open ended and sympathetic about some of the extreme Walter Mitty stuff.

If you hold this man in as much regard as I do, read with caution! If you don’t know much about him already, highly recommended.

The author has written an exhaustive study and delves deep into the psyche of a complex and fascinating man. Not afraid to expose some negative aspects of this great personality, this serves to humanise this extraordinary man and gives us a fully rounded picture with masses of interesting detail. A great read.

No spoilers from me. This chap has been a hero of mine for years, living an extraordinary life of service and courage. But there was much more to ‘Winkle’, which makes this an intriguing biogrpahy. A great addition to my library. Highly recommended. BTG
