Good book and the breadth it covers is wide. However there are some statements made that could be seriously challenged. It states that “civilisation in Western Europe fell behind the rest of the world for almost a thousand years” during the dark ages. This is a gross over simplification.

In Ireland, during the “dark ages” beautiful manuscripts were being printed, mythological stories of the were past preserved by monks. Monasteries sprung up across Ireland and became centres of learning and power; from these monasteries monks sailed to Scottish islands like iona, to France, Italy, across Europe, founding monasteries that became centres of learning.

The chapter on WWII leaves out the murder of Roma, Sinti, Jehovah Witnesseses, Slavs, and Communists by the Nazis. They only mention the systematic murder of the Jews. In the bid to be concsise you shouldn’t simplify history.

I’m sure in printed format the book is a great read but on Kindle the formatting is hopeless. Unreadable.

A very good book of general interest history. A little more basic than ideal though for my friend who is a bit of a history buff.

Great book to have an overall idea of history in timeline from beginning to present day.
It has wonderful pictures and is easy to read and follow.
However, don’t expect this to have in depth facts and information about each period of time, it’s just a quick introduction to general topics.
Great book, good quality, excellent and fast delivery

Remove the hardcover book from its outer box to reveal Tutankhamun on the front cover. The shiny hieroglyphics on box itself was enough to get my daughter interested in the history book – a first!
The 416 pages inside cover 5,000 years of illustrated history and the author uses coloured bars to introduce subjects and frequent headings to split up the text into an encyclopedia style of presentation that makes the book easy to read and and keeps even those with the shortest attention spans engaged!

In ‘World History,’ Parker hasn’t just written a history book, he’s created a coffee-table masterpiece that you can pick up and put down as often as you like, use it to settle those sisterly disagreements (“Dad, which came first, World War 2 or the English Civil War?”) and keep referring back to it when you’re caught out by a quiz show.
