Jon has written another thrilling crime book set in the Peak District with DI Jessica Ryan leading the investigation. The novel opens with a chilling scene from the past which sets the scene for the remainder of the book. As ever, Jon has done a thorough research of the area that the story is set in which makes the book even more enjoyable to read. In my case, it has opened my eyes to the history of the Peak District and its subsequent evolution into what it is now.
Needless to say, Jon has written another unique tale and I look forward to the next book in the series.
by BOOK MARK!
2nd book in the new series by J.F.Burgess and we find ourselves in the midst of what could be a very nasty crime ( victim has gone missing ) but also looks like this could be linked to a series of unsolved crimes in the same area decades before
We meet some very unsavoury characters indeed ( written brilliantly ) who are involved in some heinous ‘activities’ as Jessica tries to make sense of the current and historical
As always good descriptions of the area (s) the author knows well and it’s always easy to visualise the geography as is so well portrayed coupled with a taut and intense whodunit/thriller/police procedural make this again a more than favourable read from this author

Hot on the heels of book one, Killer on the Peaks, comes book two in this new exciting series. Four women vanished between 1990 and 2002 in the Staffordshire Moorlands area and retired journalist Henry Fellows has always believed the police didn’t make a good enough job of their investigation. One woman escaped the clutches of her abductor and still resides in a secure hospital, forever damaged by her nightmare and unable to fully help the police. All that was ever discovered of the other three were two severed fingers. When the disappearance of nineteen-year-old Tilley McCleave is reported in the news, Fellows approaches DI Jessica Ryan who, together with her team of DS Rose Martina, DS Dan Parker and DC Jack Redford, is in charge of the case and is finally taken seriously in his belief that there could be a connection. There are plenty of suspicious people surrounding Tilley, from her arrogant boyfriend and creepy stepfather to her shady workmate and violent alcoholic grandfather for the detectives to investigate for starters but evidence is thin on the ground as Tilley remains incarcerated by a masked man. The Chief Constable is under pressure and brings in profiler Lucy Stryker who previously assisted DI Blake in Stoke and suddenly Jess finds they have some very promising leads but vile discoveries are made as they start to scratch the surface. Could the same killer still be active over more than thirty years or might they have a copycat starting out on a new reign of terror? And will they recover Tilley in time?
It’s four years now since Darren’s disappearance and Jess vows never to rest until she finds the truth, suspecting DI Clive Marshall of some involvement in the loss of her husband. Will we ever know what happened to Darren? After her daughter’s ordeal in book one, Jess holds her family close assisted by her father, ex-Marine Mick Ryan, a great character himself. Jess, Rose, Jack and Dan are all good solid detectives who work well as a team and Stryker makes an invaluable addition in this dark case. This is another well written and gripping story in the series and I am eagerly awaiting book three, Murder on the Peaks.

Where is nineteen-year-old Tilley McCleave? After an argument with her boyfriend, she’s disappeared without a trace. Has something sinister happened to her?
Detective Jessica Ryan and her team are assigned to the case of finding her. They soon discover that a number of women have been abducted over a period of time, and only one survivor so far, Heidi Dawson, who has spent many years in a psychiatric hospital, unable to cope since.
With Tilley’s life now in danger, can the team find her alive? Is Heidi Dawson able to help remember even the slightest detail to bring Tilley back home.
This was a fast paced crime thriller that had me on tenterhooks throughout!
The characters were believable and some were downright evil.
I’m enjoying learning more about Jessica as the series progresses.
The story was well written and action packed, which held my attention well.
