Trinity College London Sight Reading Cello: Grades 3-5

£14.70

This progressive method provides a carefully paced approach to the sight reading requirements of Trinity grade exams at Grades 3 to 5. For each grade there are ten lessons, each with a clear area of focus. Stage-appropriate sight reading tips, both general and specific to the instrument, are given along the way. Each lesson presents four or five preparatory exercises leading to a duet, included to encourage the development of ensemble sight reading skills. While duets are not required for grade exams, they are vital in building confidence and rhythmic fluency. Each duet builds on the same musical ideas as the preceding exercises, consolidating the learning and assisting the student through familiarity. Official Trinity specimen sight reading tests conclude each grade section. By the time the student has completed the ten lessons they should be well prepared to cope with the demands of these tests.

There are many reasons why this book is a great for learning/improving string instrument sight reading. There are of course specimen tests as one may expect, but I was delighted to find out they are supplemented with many additional samples set out into handy lessons. These are designed by authors to develop good music reading habits and minimise errors. By cleverly drawing pupil’s attention to particular aspects of the music that need to be understood, noticed and performed, the lessons help achieve an accurate interpretation of the score. I like the fact that this book spans three grades, rather than just one. As a learner of cello as my third instrument I do not need to learn the notes per se, but I do need to connect the reading of pitch with all other aspects of cello technique: and this book offers specific tips
e.g. on articulation with the bow. This is quite unique among sight reading books – and in hind sight – should have been in all of them! Last but not least – sight reading is not about passing exams. It is primarily about gaining an ability to pick up a piece of music and play it a vista, often along with your friends. And the two excellent musicians who wrote this book know this – thus included sight reading duets as well, so that one can learn to read not only one’s own part but also how it may blend with another in an ensemble piece. As soon as I get past my grade 5 I am getting the next one up!
