Shutout (Rules of the Game)

£3.80

An Unputdownable College Hockey Brother’s Teammate Romance.

He’s the tall, tattooed stranger I hooked up with on Halloween… and now he’s my new roommate.

After a sudden cross-country move, I’m stuck crashing with my older brother and two of his hockey teammates for sophomore year. I’m not thrilled about shacking up with three athletes and their stinky gear, rotating door of hookups, and tendency to inhale every snack in the house. Just one reason of many that hockey players aren’t my type.

When I walk in the front door with an armload of boxes, however, I’m faced with another problem.

My anonymous fling from two months ago is Tyler Donahue, the superstar goalie for my brother’s team.

We both agree to pretend it never happened, but it quickly becomes clear neither of us can forget. Before I know it, we’re exchanging heated glances from across the room, sending spicy texts at all hours of the night, and stealing kisses behind closed doors.

Since my overprotective brother would freak out, we decide to keep things between us a secret. There’s no point in rocking the boat when I don’t want a boyfriend, and Tyler doesn’t have time for a girlfriend with his grueling hockey schedule. But as our no-strings arrangement turns into something deeper and more meaningful, I begin to see a softer side of the broody, closed-off goalie. He’s gentle, protective, and giving in every sense of the word. Despite what I told myself going in, I’m falling hard and falling fast.

We said we’d keep things casual, but hearts have a way of breaking all the rules.

Shutout is a college hockey romance with lots of spice, swoon, and a happily ever after. It’s the second book in the Rules of the Game series and can be read as a standalone.

Tropes:

  • forced proximity / roommates
  • broody tattooed goalie hero
  • sunshine party girl heroine
  • sneaking around
  • ADHD and anxiety rep

I read Offside over 6 months ago and it still remains one of my all time favourite books, so to say I was excited for book 2 in the series was an understatement!

Tyler and Sera’s story was the perfect mix of heart melting sweetness and the best spice. They became each others safe space and the journey from friends with benefits to falling head over heels for each other was beautiful. A hot broody tattoo’d goalie. Sign me up. Seriously, I want my own Tyler!

“He looks at you like you’re the only person in the room.”

I’d have rated their story 5 ⭐️’s for the spice alone but my god the story!!! I loved it. Sera is going through so many changes all at once, trying to support her mum, moving, going through the uncertainty of figuring out what you want to do with the rest of your life. Throughout all of this she still remains one of the absolute sweetest characters, so relatable, so genuinely likeable. I really connected with her character, making everything so much more emotional. I swear I cried and I laughed with thee characters, I couldn’t have asked for more!

“Something about his tone makes me feel warm and fuzzy, like a hug. It’s new, and I like it.”

Tyler’s character. I loved him. He was going through such a difficult time trying to manage everyone else’s expectations and learning what his true priorities really are, I haven’t read a hockey book from the goalies perspective before and I found it so interesting! The pressure is so intense and those little moments between Hades and Tink where they blocked the rest of the world out and just existed together was beautiful. Where can I find my own Hades?!

These characters weren’t perfect, they acknowledged their faults, and boy did it make them more human!

Trophy for cutest nicknames ever definitely goes to Tink and Hades. I melted.

It’s safe to say I absolutely loved this book, it was easily 5 stars for me and is right up there with Offside as one of my absolute favs

Oh my gosh, I didn’t know if possible to love this more than Offside but I did. So amazing, Tyler and Sera story and chemist throughout the book is fantastic. If you are not a fan of the third act break up trope then you’re in luck. Strong story throughout. Fantastic!

I read offside and loved it, and when I saw that this book was out. I was straight on reading it. I loved the first book, so knew I would love this one.

    Thoughts ????

I loved that the Halloween party one night stands ended up created this ???? His bestfriends little sister. OMG ????

Tyler, He was so cute that he actually didn’t sleep with anyone after Sera. I thought is was so cute that he caught feelings for her and stared at her at parties. He was so whipped straight away. He definitely has a major character development and It was so nice to see him fall in love and it was especially cute at the end when he said:

“I love your belly. That’s my baby in there.”

Sera, she just wanted to find love like her brother did. I love when her audiobook started playing in the car, and on the dirtiest part too and while Tyler was with her, she was so embarrassed but by the end they were listening to them together. ????

I love the nickname, Tink and Hades. I know it was due to their Halloween costumes but I think it’s so cute.

I adored them both, he still loved and adored her. Even with her being loud, disorganised, extra and messy, due to her ADHD but loved her anyway. And she also fell in love with him even though he was having a difficult time dealing with his fathers expectations, as well as demanding explanations to do his team well, which means he was all about the team.

It was a little heartbreaking towards the end but they didn’t let it stop their future. As life is to short.

One thing that I couldn’t get over because it was so cute was the 21 questions they were playing. Well turned into 1162 questions. The ending was so adorable, Ending with a pregnancy and also an engagement ????????????

This next book can’t come soon enough ????????

I’ve had this in my library for a little while, having really enjoyed Offside, and I’m so glad I got round to reading it. Even though he had moments of self absorption, Tyler was a great book boyfriend and I loved the way he cared so much for Seraphina and really noticed everything about her. I liked the way Seraphina grew stronger as the book progressed, even if she didn’t necessarily see it for herself. It was good to have glimpses of Chase and Bailey, Dallas and Siobhan too. I also enjoyed disliking Abby and Rob intensely!
I’ve read too many books recently which just finished without a decent epilogue, or with a chapter introducing the next character in the series without having properly finished the current story. I’m happy to report there was no disappointment with this ending and I loved the peek into Tink and Hades’ future with the epilogue.
