It was a strong face, certainly – the eyes pale grey and very cold, the mouth was hard, the dark hair – grey-streaked now – still fell in the authentic comma over the forehead.
This is how John Pearson reacted to his first encounter with the real James Bond, an encounter probably unique in the annals of thriller writing. He went on to write the bestselling authorised biography of Ian Fleming. At the time, like most of the world he assumed that James Bond was nothing more than a character in Fleming’s highly charged imagination. Then he began to have his doubts. Doubts which were reaching such a pitch that the British secret service were trying to warn him off the scent. Despite this, he finally became convinced that James Bond was not only real, but actually alive.
Thanks to a change in policy within the secret service he was invited to embark upon a companion volume to his life of Fleming. This resulting book must be one of the most extraordinary biographies of our times – the authorised life of a myth, the official biography of James Bond.

Brilliant. So glad this is in print again. I read it years ago when I borrowed it from the library. Will be purchasing the hardback too.

In the early Seventies, Ian Fleming’s biographer John Pearson wrote this excellent and interesting book in which James Bond 007 is revealed to be a real person. It is not a contamination of the Fleming series, but a stand-alone story, just as Nicholas Meyer’s ‘The Seven Per Cent Solution’ was with Sherlock Holmes. Complaints about ‘getting Bond wrong’ are meaningless. The only thing I did not like was the fact it ends with a lead-in to an Australian adventure involving Blofeld which was never written. It sounds like it would have been exciting indeed ( unlike the last three Bond movies ). If you are a true Bond fan, you must have this book on your shelf next to the Fleming canon.

If you like to imagine “but what if he were real” this book is for you. Fans of Bond will have a lot of fun picking up the clues and enjoying the plotline of a massive deception perpetrated by Ian Fleming. A whole new bond story in itself too.

What an excellent book! The author is a consummate storyteller and writer extraordinaire. Attention to detail and description is very ‘Ian Fleming’. Would recommend to anyone who enjoys a good story well told.

A great read but there were some poor plots in amongst it all. A shame because it somewhat spoilt a very entertains book. Great concept.

Joins up the history of Bond that Ian Fleming left unsaid.
But you must have your mind adjusted to the period that the books were written.
Great read
