OSCEs for Medical Finals
£27.10£31.30 (-13%)
OSCEs for Medical Finals has been written by doctors from a variety of specialties with extensive experience of medical education and of organising and examining OSCEs.
The book and website package consists of the most common OSCE scenarios encountered in medical finals, together with checklists, similar to OSCE mark schemes, that cover all of the key learning points students need to succeed. Each topic checklist contains comprehensive exam-focussed advice on how to maximise performance together with a range of ‘insider’s tips’ on OSCE strategy and common OSCE pitfalls.
Designed to provide enough coverage for those students who want to gain as many marks as possible in their OSCEs, and not just a book which will ensure students ‘scrape a pass’, the book is fully supported by a companion website at www.wiley.com/go/khan/osces, containing:
- OSCE checklists from the book
- A survey of doctors and students of which OSCEs have a high chance of appearing in finals in each UK medical school

A well written and well presented book found after a long search on the shelves of the medical book-sellers. It prepares a student from the early stages to the end of the OSCEs. The top tips, generic points and the check lists help students not to forget the fundamentals of medical OSCEs and a thorough glance at these sections give confidence during the tense time before the OSCEs.The ‘hints and tips’ and ‘possible questions to be asked’ are very useful. Summary of the common conditions seen in the OSCEs with the key points and reminders of the investigation and management are some of the features that can be highlighted in recommending this book. The authors must be congatulated for their efforts in producing a ”master-piece” for final year students. It is an absolute tool for OSCEs preparation.

OSCE’s are always a daunting prospect for a medical student, no matter how many you have done in the past you will most likely always get the last minute jitters before you start the exam. Many of us are always looking for resources that will help us in our preparing for the OSCE so that we can go into the exam with greater confidence about what we will be able to do.
That is where this book is intended to come in so that the medical student can start to get more of an idea of what some of the most common stations in the medical school exams are looking for. In the case of this book, each of the chapters which is on a specific OSCE skill starts with a mark scheme that would be most likely used for that station which you can also download & print from the accompanying website to allow you to use them in mock exams you do with friends. The rest of the chapter then goes on to walk you through the OSCE skill. This is perhaps a great strength of the book some would argue however there are other titles available that certainly do this and also include online video demonstrations for you to watch at no extra cost despite costing around the same amount;
Clinical Skills for OSCEs
.
The disadvantage of this text apart from lacking such videos though is that it does not include many suggestions on how to phrase your explanation of what you will undertake nor does it include some very common stations such as the female examination which is a great surprise.
In conclusion this is certainly a good book but in this reviewers opinion it is not the best book available if you are looking for one to help you through the OSCE.

This is a well written revision aid for medical finals. In particular the OSCE checklist and likelihood tables were very useful. Highly recommended

I bought this title along with many more to aid osce revision. This book offers the least in terms of helping you prepare for medical finals. I found myself using other books more than this as this offers the very basic such as marking schemes and has more about the station after it. I feel that even though it offers you marking schemes it doesn’t give any examples of how to phrase certain things which is also important in the OSCE setting. However if you are looking for a simple book containing mark schemes this is it but overall to prepare you for the OSCE this isn’t the book of choice.
