An accessible and practical guide to personal finance that busts myths, clarifies jargons and provides the best options for building your wealth.
More and more people are reassessing their lives as a result of the pandemic. Many have left their jobs or reduced their hours. Others have resolved to work only as long as they must, retiring early to focus on families and friends, hobbies or travel. Meanwhile, employers all over the world are experimenting with a four-day week.
Making the most of these choices requires having and growing enough money to enjoy your future life, without needing to worry about it running out. But when it comes to investing in a pension, there is a dizzying number of complex options available.
This book is designed to provide clear, objective guidance that cuts through the jargon, giving you control over your financial future. The authors strip away the marketing-speak, and through simple graphs, charts and diagrams, provide an evidence-based money manual that you can use again and again. They also alert you to myths and get-rich-quick schemes everyone should avoid.
It’s a highly practical and refreshingly honest book, written by two independent experts who have seen how the investment industry works from the inside, and how it profits from complexity, ignorance and fear. They show, in practical language, how UK savers and investors can beat this system and, crucially, make more money for themselves than they do for financial services firms.

Finance can be a bit dry, but its essential part of life, especially if you want to live a great life. I found this book so helpful in defining my goals, working through what needs to be understood, gathering all the right info and the workbook was great too. it helped me feel really excited about my future. THANK YOU!!!

This book is worth the price… An absolutely fantastic book to get your family finances in order and then maximise them.
The information is detailed enough, but not overwhelming. It gives logical, practical advice that you can actually work through by yourself/ with your family, that will have real impact on your future.
It’s already saved me money in advisor / managed fund fees, helped me envisage my retirement income and given me more confidence to make investment decisions for myself.
I’d also recommend The Evidence Based Investor website as well, once you finish the book.
Buy it, read it, do the workbook activities, put it into practice and then recommend it to a friend. They’ll thank you for it!

I was looking for a book that was UK focussed and could help me take charge of my financial future. It’s very well written and very practical useful advice. I wasn’t going to complete the downloadable workbooks but actually that has been incredibly useful and continues to be. This book has given me the confidence and knowledge I needed to plan for my financial future. Helpful for every stage of financial life but I wish I had read something like this 20 years ago!

Clear, informative, incredibly useful and inspiring. Does what it says on the cover.

I have read a large number of financial and investment books. They are usually US based as that is the main market for those type of books. This book is UK based. I found it to be extremely useful from a whole financial planning perspective and entirely relevant to UK based readers.

As a Financial Planner, this book is well put together. It is a good balance of common sense and easy-to-read advice.

The book is perfect for those people who are starting to take more control of their finances. Meaning, it provides a thorough review of all the different things you should be considering when looking to take on a bit more of a DIY approach to your future. Making you realise the significance of costs, costs, costs and the fact that by doing this it can be quite counterintuitive to your final retiring lump… meaning you will have significantly more in your pot at retirement. Looking at aftercare and other such matters that I haven’t come across before in an investment book. This is book certainly shows you how you might find the life you want, whilst also helping you to consider how you’d like to manage your legacy for your nearest and dearest, once your life comes to an end. Thank you once again for making me think beyond the the simple ups and downs of year on year market volatility!

A brilliant book. The book has a logical layout walking through all aspects of managing money. It covers concepts, theory and definitions in an easily digestible way, but also includes convincing evidence, references and useful websites. I wish I had read it 30 years ago! I have bought 2 more copies to give to my children.
