Best book for any sport fan . My 8 years old loved it !!

My son has now decided he wants to be a Formula One driver or a champion diver. He keeps throwing facts at me and is up in the mornings reading this in bed (not something I’m complaining about at all!).
I really like this sports encyclopedia. I used to have encyclopedias myself (Questions and Answers, science, words, biographies), but never one that looked quite like this. Very stylised illustrations and a particular colour palette, it’s a lot more fun-looking than mine used to be, probably a little less text-heavy, but no less full of information.
WIth a full-on index (baseball includes a reference to Jane Austen, negro leagues and World War II!), the book is a large hardback that covers sports in the following sections:
– Ball sports
– Racket sports
– Athletics
– Gymnastics
– Water sports
– Motor sports
– Target sports
– Combat sports
– Sporting Events (Olympics, Paralympics, Winter Olympics)
It feels thorough, and each page goes into a fair amount of detail. For example, the page on Ice Hockey covers:
rules, jargon, uniform and positions, penalties and powerplay, facts (historical, quirky) and shows a bird’s-eye rink.
It isn’t a book that tells jokes, it’s a proper encyclopedia that breaks up text into sections with colour blocks and illustration and does it very effectively.
Chock-a-block full of facts and history, it’s the sort of book you can spend hours flicking through or read cover to cover, or look up a sport and learn the basics of what you’d need to know.
Rather indispensable for a young sports fan’s bedroom, and could be well-thumbed through in school classes/libraries as well. Great for quizzes and competitions, as well as sharing.
The reading comprehension required will be for that of an 8- or 9-year old (my son’s almost 8 and seems fairly comfortable looking through by himself). I hope the publishers commission similar books for other fields.

Great book for kids but to be honest i’m reluctant to hand it over! Takes me back to watching Trans World Sport on Saturday mornings. Full of facts and lots of really nice illustrations. Highly recommended
