Book Band: Lime, ideal for ages 6+

A funny, uplifting tale about family and the healing power of pets from internationally published author, Chitra Soundar.

Keva loves helping out at Grandpa’s pet adoption centre. When he has to go to hospital, she knows that his best friend, Atlas the tortoise, is just the thing to cheer him up. It’s too bad that the rude hospital manager, Mr Sallow, has banned all pets from the ward!

But when Keva notices a picture on his desk, she hatches a plan that she hopes will change his mind. This story features lively black-and-white illustrations by Fay Austin.

My six year old is the perfect age and ability for this. Starting to want to read on his own and able, this book is just long enough per chapter to stretch whilst not over-tiring him through effort.

And it’s a great story! There could be a whole series about Keva, her granddad’s pet adoption centre and Giant African Tortoise Atlas. Here, Keva takes Atlas to visit her granddad in hospital when he goes in for his MOT. But Mr Sallow, the hospital manager points to the ‘no pets allowed’ sign and refuses. Can Keva work out why he’s so grumpy and possibly help?

It’s a whole story wrapped up within a chapter book length (5 chapters), with lots of illustrations, animal fact sheets and a lot of love for animals thrown in. There’s even suggestions for activities at the end.

A parent or teacher might have to explain the Latin names of the animals mentioned, and the factsheet format, but aside from that it’s accessible without much support.

It would work as a bedtime story for those not able to read themselves, and definitely for those starting to want to branch out on their own.

With thanks to Bloomsbury for the sample reading copy.
