An excellent primer on the American political system that does a lot to contextualise where we are by showing how we got here.
Jules Scheele’s cast of characters are very finely drawn, and illustrate the democratic ideals of the nation without ever obscuring the jagged realities.

I bought this book to learn the basics about American politics and how their government works. Overall, this book does that job very well if you bear in mind that it is only an introduction and will not go into detail on any of the topics. It gives the reader an idea of where to look next if they want to find out more.
It could have done with a more critical eye at proof-reading stage, though. There are a number of typos and at least one howler: Joseph Welch, the famous lawyer, drawn and named as Joseph Welsh on p74. These are the kinds of mistake that really shows a lack of care.

My son’s just started A level politics and this was a great starter book. I found myself flicking through it too!

The book has a liberal slant, which I share. Still, I think material giving a more sympathetic view of the conservative position, which I would not share, would have given a more rounded picture of politics in America. It’s interesting to note, though, that Obama, Kennedy and Lincoln, for example, do come in for mild criticism.
I would have liked more on the mechanics of politics in the USA. How do elections work, for example? Without that you can’t see the link between politics and policies.
And more on the history – of structures, systems and policies. Without that, the present state of affairs, and Mr Trump in particular, are incomprehensible.
