Making Every Geography Lesson Count: Six principles to support great geography teaching (Making Every Lesson Count series)

£14.20

Mark Enser’s ‘Making Every Geography Lesson Count: Six principles to support great geography teaching’ maps out the key elements of effective geography teaching and shows teachers how to develop their students conceptual and contextual understanding of the subject over time.

What sets geography apart from other subjects is the value placed on seeing the connections between the different parts of its broad curriculum, on building links between different topics, and on thinking like a geographer. Writing in the practical, engaging style of the award-winning ‘Making Every Lesson Count’, Mark Enser has set out to help his fellow practitioners maximise this value by combining the time-honoured wisdom of excellent geography teachers with the most useful evidence from cognitive science.

‘Making Every Geography Lesson Count’ is underpinned by six pedagogical principles challenge, explanation, modelling, practice, feedback and questioning that will enable teachers to ensure that students leave their lessons with an improved knowledge of the world, a better understanding of how it works and the geographical skills to support their learning.

Each chapter looks at one of the six principles and begins with twin scenarios which illustrate some of the real challenges faced in geography classrooms. Mark then delves into a discussion on the underpinning theory and offers a range of practical, gimmick-free strategies designed to help teachers overcome these obstacles. Furthermore, each chapter also ends with a case study from a fellow geography teacher who has successfully employed the principle in their own classroom.

Written for new and experienced practitioners alike, this all-encompassing book offers an inspiring alternative to restrictive Ofsted-driven definitions of great teaching and empowers geography teachers to deliver great lessons and celebrate high-quality practice.

Suitable for geography teachers of students aged 11 18 years.

I love this book. It’s erudite and witty and it’s been written just for me, and every other geography teacher. The author obviously knows what he’s talking about and put a great deal of love into this book. Love for geography, for teaching, for self improvement and for the continued gift of geography. If you’re a geography teacher you should have this in your satchel, next to your atlas. If you’re a head of department you should have this book on top of your desk. And if you’re a senior leader you should have this book in your office, read it from cover to cover and then go and find a geographer and shake them by the hand!

All geography teachers, new and old, should read this book. It’s provides many useful insights into what we should all be driving to provide within our classrooms. Some are obvious, but it’s good to be reaffirmed and reminded of the key points/ideas.

This book gets straight to the point and each idea is peppered with examples and evidence. Throughout the book, the reader is reminded of the interdisciplinary nature of the subject, its importance to society, and how those aspects can be used to shape each lesson. Most of all, the book is full of practical tips and advice that are justified with clear explanations, making it accessible for those new to teaching.

A great read for any teacher in any geography department! This book really simplifies the 6 key teaching concepts in a way that you can revolutionise your department by keeping it simple. This could be your handbook for successful geography teaching, written in an engaging style that makes it a difficult to put down book, I have little time to read but found the time with this. Thank you Mark for sharing your practice for us all to learn from!

Mark’s critical approach and analysis in this book I believe to be the single most useful resource/ guide for all Geography Teachers, Geography leads and anyone who has a role to play in a child’s Geographical education. Whether experienced or new to the profession Mark style is both incisive and informative refreshing or invigorating your passion for Geography and Geography Teaching. I think this should be a compulsory read for all Geography educators at all levels.

I must admit to a certain scepticism regarding this sort of book. The pedagogy bandwagon is pretty crowded at the moment with people keen to sell you their brilliant method of doing your job better. The negatives first. There is very little in this book that is especially new; anyone who has been teaching for more than a few years will not find stunning new approaches here.
However if, like me, you are not a geography subject specialist, this book offers an excellent checklist for getting planning done with much less hassle than normal. I especially liked the author’s keenness on showing the value of the subject to the wider curriculum. I’m glad I bought this book and will be dipping into it frequently.

First off, I’m a primary school teacher and while I didn’t get the perfect hue of green and blue pencil crayon to buy so the pupils could colour in maps, I got so much more. My first in the making every lesson count series. Won’t be my last. Primary geography leads can get so much from this and many strategies from each principles transcend the subject domain! Great stuff. Look forward to the next one.

And incredibly relatable and readable book, and a must-have for every geography teacher, whether you are just starting out or, like me, have been teaching for over 20 years. Mark’s passion for improving teaching is evident throughout, yet his insistence that we should drop the fads and keep teaching simple is what is at the heart of this book. Practical ideas on every page that can be put into use tomorrow in your classroom. Make sure everyone in your department has a copy!
