In our age of globalisation and pandemic, how should we react to the new Islamophobic movements now spreading in the West? Everywhere the far right is on the march, with nationalist and populist parties thriving on the back of popular anxieties about Islam and the Muslim presence. Hijab and minaret bans, mosque shootings, hostility to migrants and increasingly scornful media stereotypes seem to endanger the prospects for friendly coexistence and the calm uplifting of Muslim populations. In this series of essays Abdal Hakim Murad dissects the rise of Islamophobia on the basis of Muslim theological tradition. Although the proper response to the current impasse is clearly indicated in Qur’an and Hadith, some have lost the principle of trust in divine wisdom and are responding with hatred, fearfulness or despair. Murad shows that a compassion-based approach, rooted in an authentic theology of divine power, could transform the current quagmire into a bright landscape of great promise for Muslims and their neighbours.

This is not a novel book but a collection of essays and lectures that have been delivered by the author in the past.

The prose style is complex but the ideas expressed fairly detailed and well thought through.

Unfortunately there is a fair degree of disjointment from chapter to chapter and it isn’t really clear what the overall aim of this literary project is. There doesn’t seem to be a methodological or structural framework of change clearly outlined throughout the work. The Marxist substructure of modern European liberalism is also left fairly unexplored.

Nonetheless there are valuable insights to be had about the failings of the Muslim community to deal with the challenges ahead and some of the inherent contradictions of the new post-Enlightenment European project.

A very thought-provoking book. If the challenge for Muslims living with and in hyper-modernity interests you, this book acts as a foil to both mainstream left- and right-wing discourse. The tone is quietly confident, supremely calm, and deeply grounded in Islam.

The author broaches many complex subjects and the many challenges facing western Muslims. He digs into some of the causes underpinning the conditions of Muslim society in Europe – internal and external – and provides useful religious paradigms (most notably Ishmaelism and Lahhabism) to help navigate the reader through much of the subject matter.

This is a gem. A beautifully written work with rich and dense style, but so much to learn from. I was laughing out loud at some places, it is a positive book with a hopeful perspective.

The English of the author is phenomenally good and this serves his at times brilliant articulation. Challenging to read but stimulating and full of well thought out insights.

It helps you to see from a different perspective which has great knowledge and lots of observation.
