A fitting book in the Rebus series with plenty of interesting twists to this tale. Bringing in all the great characters that have appeared along his journey. Let’s hope we see more of Clarke and Fox including Rebus in his new role.

John Rebus is on trial but for what crime? Is it linked to a group of corrupt police officers who it is known Rebus has connections to? Detective Inspector Siobhan Clarke is finding the investigation difficult, especially with Malcolm Fox sniffing around. In all the years she has worked with him, has Rebus not been honest with her all along?

A Heart Full of Headstones certainly grips you right from the opening chapter as we see retired detective John Rebus on the stand for a serious crime. Throughout the book, we are kept in the dark about what crime he has allegedly committed with hints and red herrings thrown in until we actually discover the truth. No spoilers whatsoever, but I really hope the next book isn’t too far away as I am desperate to know the outcome of the trial and what the repercussions are for Rebus.

As always, the story is well-written with the usual supporting characters playing a huge part in what is a captivating and shocking plot. It is always good to see Big Ger Cafferty and it has been fascinating, over the years, to see the changing relationship between himself and Rebus.

I am really enjoying the direction Ian Rankin has taken Rebus in since he has retired from the police force although with his ailing health and events that take place in this book, I fear that we are heading towards an end. Hopefully, there are still a few more books to come before we bid a fond farewell to one of the best fictional detectives around.

As usual, Rebus draws us in. Even though he is older and not necessarily wiser, he has the power to bring us into the story. Excellent read.

This had a lot of everything I like about Rebus books. Rebus, now retired but unable to give up the job, Big Ger Cafferty similarly retired but also unable to give up his previous way of life and an increasingly assertive Siobahn whose career is now in full flight.
I liked the way that Fox, Clarke and others (Esson in particular) took a higher profile in the story which wasn’t all about Rebus. This bodes well for the future as there is bound to be a follow to this one.
A good book, took me to places I didn’t expect to go to and a good ending worthy of the book as a whole.

True to form Rebus novel with main character now retired and become old and ill. Evolution of characters has been interesting to read as work towards end of series.

I enjoyed the latest Rebus tale. A typical fast moving story well written with enough twists to keep me interested until the end.

Great read and, if this is the final Rebus novel, it is great end. R.I.P. Rebus and I look forward to the next Rankin novel

Ian Rankin at his best, Rebus fans should not miss this one, Edinburgh lowlife is laid wide open as old cases are put under review and Rebus is put under pressure.
A true page turner, a truly good read.
