This book is split into two main parts. The first 50 pages or so are general information about growing veg, explaining the main concepts and going into things like composting, watering, crop rotation and so on.
The rest of the book has information specific to various plants, with a two-page spread for each. Each of those two-page spreads is laid out the same way, so it is easy to find what you want to know.

The plant-specific pages are grouped so that all the leafy veg are together, all the root veg are together, and so on, with a short troubleshooting page at the end of each group.

We are beginners at this, just starting to grow things in our tiny garden in a raised bed plus a few pots and grow bags on the patio, and this explained to us very clearly what we need to be doing.

Jo Whittingham has compiled a comprehensive, educational and easy to read book on how to grow your own vegetables.

I must admit I have forgotten half my knowledge of how to grow vegetables.
As you would expect from the publishers DK the book is comprehensive and well Illustrated.

Following the techniques allows you to grow your own veg with confidence and dare I say, success.

planning, planting, and growing; types of veg to grow for your garden; composting; containers, soil, and bed types; starting from seed/plants; feeding; watering; protection; post-harvest and preparing for a second season.

The balance of the book is concerned with specific vegetable types. A pretty solid range is covered including fairly standard basics such as broad, runner and French beans, sweetcorn, potatoes, carrots, parsnips, onions and shallots, as well as less common varieties such as Borlotti beans, kohlrabi, chard, and globe artichokes. The book doesn’t assume that a beginner gardener will have access to a full-size greenhouse, so by and large the varieties focussed on encompass things which need to be started under cover (e.g. on a windowsill or in a mini greenhouse) and can then be moved outside; or which can be planted direct into the soil. So e.g. peppers and aubergines aren’t included, and the only cucumbers dealt with here are the ridge variety.

Vegetables are divided roughly by types, with a couple of pages of troubleshooting advice following each section. This troubleshooting gives some hints and helps with problem identification, but is quite basic, and for most problems additional information needs to be sought. For example, caterpillars are given as an example of a problem affecting leafy (brassica type) plants and it’s mentioned that you need to keep an eye out for eggs and manually remove these/caterpillars – but there’s no warning about the different types of caterpillars and that you need to be looking for both clusters of eggs (typical of large cabbage white eggs), and rather harder to find individual eggs (small cabbage white). A single caterpillar image – a mature, hairy, large cabbage white caterpillar – is shown. This is the type that tends to be laid in clusters and is easier to find on plants, but it would helpful if the book mentioned that this is not representative of the appearance of all brassica-devouring caterpillars. Not least as the green caterpillars of small cabbage whites can be just as voracious, but harder to locate. Using netting is mentioned, but not which type to use. And there’s no mention of simple, organic sprays (such as a combination of water, garlic, and a drop of cooking oil) which can help to make plants less appealing to a variety of pests.

This DK Grow addition is a fantastic book for referencing throughout the year and is the perfect guide for a wide range of ages.
Offering practical advice and guidance for all the popular vegetables that so many of us have taken to growing during the many lockdowns, this is a valuable guide and one that is extremely user-friendly.
With each vegetable selected given two whole pages, here you can read through their sowing, growing, and harvesting requirements and much more besides.
Also ideal for beginners and those younger gardeners, this is a wonderful choice of guides and is incredibly low priced.
