A Deal With The Devil: The perfect work place, enemies to lovers romcom!

£9.50

A temp assistant and the British boss she loves to hate . . . The Devils series is a sexy blend of spice, romance and grumpy men. Prepare to laugh, swoon and cry . . . perfect for fans of Christina Lauren and Emma Chase.

He might not be the devil, but working under him for six weeks is my idea of hell.

Hayes Flynn is an arrogant jerk known best for his scotch habit and the way he spreads his British “charm” all over Hollywood, never with the same woman twice.

He’s the last person I want to work for, except he has a face I can’t look away from, and the longer we’re together, the harder he is to hate. Because under that smug exterior is a heart he doesn’t want to show-one that was badly broken a decade earlier.

A part of me wants to fix it for him before I leave…but can I do it without breaking my own in the process?

“I wish my husband would look at me the way he looks at you,” Linda whispers. “Like he could be completely content if he never had to look at anything else.”

A Deal with the Devil was our first book by Elizabeth O’Roark, and we loved it! An enemy to lovers/grumpy boss-employee romance with amusing banter, a fun level of snarkiness, and chemistry we could feel through the pages. And then there’s Hayes Flynn. We loved his grumpy arse.

‘Instead of a healthy reminder of Haye’s callousness, I’ve just watched him die of a thousand small cuts and a few major ones.’

Told from the POV of aspiring author, Natalia (Tali) Bell, still reeling after the loss of her father, her mother falling apart, and shouldering the responsibility for her family. Not only that, her boyfriend Matt, who she has supported from day dot, finally got his big break in Hollywood, and as a thank you, he decided to cheat on her the day of her father’s funeral. You could say, she’s at rock bottom.

He exhales. “I get the feeling all your knowledge of my homeland comes from reading books about nineteenth-century orphans.”

When her best friend Jonathan puts her forward as his replacement for a couple of months as PA to the well-renowned, well-endowed, eternal bachelor, Plastic Surgeon to the stars, Hayes Flynn, the financial gain is too good to pass up. Tali accepted an advance on her first novel, much of which has been eaten up in paying her family’s debts.

How hard can it be, right? Well, when the man is as sexy as sin, wants you available at his every whim, is incapable of fetching his own Starbucks – oh, and he expects you to ‘politely dispose’ of his overnight conquests, you could say, Tali has her hands full.

‘If he was mine, I’d have held on with everything I had.’

We really did love this book! We found the sassy beautiful Tali holding her own against Hayes hilarious! This girl really gives as good as she gets – hmmm if only she didn’t try and badly copy his British accent ha-ha. Oh, and did we mention Hayes is a sexy brooding Brit?

“Honestly, the hangover is bad, but your British accent is now the most painful thing about my day.”

The push/pull was perfectly timed, and the emotional baggage of both Tali and Hayes proves obstacles to their feelings. Hayes’s baggage especially was gobsmacking! As their snarky sniping turns to heated exchanges, we were there for it all!

‘I could kiss a thousand men, and none of them would match Hayes.’

First book I read by this author and would definitely recommend. The story really flows, characters are developed splendidly despite their emotional baggage. I loved the banter between the two main characters and how the story ended

O’Roark built the story in such away that it’s a slow burn with a fiery blaze that then is doused in commitment and family trauma / responsibility that makes you ache when Tali puts herself last again. Both Tali and Hayes being twin flames who had felt betrayal before and keep trying to avoid getting burnt again feels refreshingly realistic and both characters grow independently.

    Spoiler ————

Tali finding her voice felt genuine throughout as she grew from trying to write to spite her ex to finally seeing that her lack of agency had lost her everything!

    —————— Spoiler end.

I can’t wait to read the next two advertised at the end but also hope I get to see further stories of the other characters.

I really enjoyed this book, the only reason it didn’t get 5 stars is because I prefer a dual pov and also the ending felt a little rushed. That being said the banter between tali and Hayes was great. Looking forward to next in the series

Finally gotten around to reading this series after getting an arc for book 4!

“Jesus, you’re like Voldemort. I say your name and you appear from the ether,”

This was a pretty cliché romance, with… ngl, some convenient scenes but the thing that made me like it was the humour running throughout, that increased the chemistry between the pair.

“It’s been at least ten minutes since you’ve nagged me or delivered unsolicited advice.”

Tali is an aspiring writer who’s struggling to make ends meet whilst helping to care for her family. So, when she’s offered a temp job which pays well, to work as an assistant for Hayes Flynn, she takes it even though she isn’t his biggest fan.

“Last I checked, answering phones didn’t require an MBA from Harvard.”
    “Which you clearly don’t have.”

Both of these characters made me laugh with their sarcasm and comments to one another, and I thought the story of how Hayes came to be interested in Tali was actually really sweet. It definitely makes a lot of his behaviour at the start make more sense, but it was funny to see Tali have to deal with some of the stuff too.

“Do you like it? … I d*sposed of her, just like you asked … I thought you’d like it. Now we can be together forever.”

I won’t lie, without the humour, I probably wouldn’t have liked this as much because the cliché storylines were pretty predictable and some of the scenarios were clearly written just to point out how much Hayes liked Tali. For example: there’s a scene where they’re having dinner together and some other random couple comes over to them and asks if they can sit with them, as the wife was saying how much Hayes and Tali reminded her of their marriage when they were younger. Cue the objections that they’re not together blah blah. A situation like that is obviously highly unlikely to ever happen in real life so I felt like those sentiments either weren’t needed, or could’ve been expressed in another manner.

Likewise, I was kind of hoping Tali wouldn’t make up with her family as easily as she did because I felt like she just had one outburst and then that was it, everything worked out. And I would’ve preferred for this to have been a bit spicier as we don’t really get anything until after 70%, but, I am also glad that Tali tried to remain professional instead of just jumping straight into bed with Hayes. Overall I’d give this a 3.6* as it was still an easy read and I did like it.

Looking forward to reading the rest of this series and seeing which characters they’re going to feature. I know book two is about Drew but it’ll be interesting to see who she’s going to end up with. And also, i imagine Ben is getting a book too.

It’s a super sweet read. The characters, the build of it all. It was lovely to read, and whilst there was a heartbreaking moment, you kept it brief and didn’t tear me to shreds.
