For anyone who has read up on serial killers this book is a must read. Although fiction, the killings are based off real life serial killers. The story is well written with enough twists and turns to keep you guessing. Definitely a page turner. I have never read anything by this author before but have already ordered the sequel. Highly recommended

Sam Holland has exploded onto the crime fiction scene with her debut novel, The Echo Man. If you enjoy fast paced, gritty and very dark crime thrillers, then you definitely need to check it out, if you haven’t done so already. I would add as a warning though, that I don’t think this book is for the faint hearted as it is very gruesome. It’s one of the darkest crime fiction novels I’ve read.

Sam Holland certainly does not shy away from the darkness. Sam really delves deep here and she has created a complex, well thought out plot. Jess is a really intriguing character. She is plunged into a nightmare right away at the start of the book, when her husband is killed following a fire at her house. She and her daughter escape by the skin of their teeth. But Jess immediately is considered a suspect by the police in her husband’s death. Without sticking around to clear her name, Jess decides to go on the run.

Following the shocking opening, Jess teams up with disgraced detective Nate Griffin who also has a dark past. I thought their pairing was really interesting, especially when they begin to get to grips with the case together. You can feel the emotional turmoil Jess is going through following her husband’s murder. I had to know why she had taken the path of running, rather than cooperating with the police and their investigation. Surely this would be the best thing for her, and her daughter, who she is leaving alone at the most horrific time in her life. I had so many questions about this that I wanted answered.

The detectives and Jess know they are facing a sadistic serial killer, who is taking it upon themselves to recreate famous serial killings. This killer is one of the most chilling I have come across in this genre, and there were definitely quite a few scenes which made me want to sleep with the light on after reading them. I wanted to know what their motive was in carrying out these crimes. This kept me turning the pages as Jess and Nate Griffin raced to find the answers.

The Echo Man is a highly entertaining, dark read that had me flying through the pages. The final scenes were so chilling. My eyes were glued to the page as I was reading them. I’m really looking forward to seeing what Sam Holland writes next.

    Read this if:
???? You know your serial killers
    ???? You enjoy police/detective perspectives

    ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

????I listened to this book with a friend last month. I went in a little nervous about all the hype but was pleased to see for the most part it lived up the hype

????This book isn’t to be read little & often. It’s meant to be binged in one sitting. I loved it the more I listened as it’s a lot to take on & I think if you didn’t pick it up often you’d lose the storyline.

????The characters were all pretty interesting & I particularly liked the snippets about ‘someone’ in the past & trying to work out who it was in present day. The Jess & Nate storyline felt a little odd & unnecessary. ????‍♀️

????The ending was impressive. I was really satisfied with it. I won’t say more as it’s good to go in blind!

????My main criticism is the pace. It took some time to get into it & work out how it all got together. Patience was key!

????I’d happily pick up the next book in the series. Maybe just not at the same time I’m reading other books of a similar genre!
