This is a good book to discuss feelings with a toddler. I will often get it out to read at bedtime on days when I know something has upset my daughter in the day and it gives me the opportunity to ask ‘did you feel sad/angry/scared about anything today?’ And discuss it with her. She’s nearly 3

I bought this book for my daughter’s second birthday and she adores it.

She loves naming the different colours, feelings and completing the little actions along with each, I.e. taking a deep breath, stomping or shouting ‘not fair!’, as we read through the book. It’s really helped her to gain a good understanding of feelings and she does now use the words to describe feelings she and others are experiencing, which is lovely to see.

The illustrations are unique and pleasing too. This isn’t the pop up version, but the illustrations are designed to look like painted cardboard cutouts, which is a refreshing and interesting design choice.

The monster itself isn’t scary in the slightest either.

I particularly like the use of the concepts of ‘colours being mixed up and confused’ and pulling out and labelling each emotion to help the colour monster understand himself and ultimately feel better. All emotions are labelled as being healthy and very normal too, with some comments on how to cope with the tricker emotions. It’s all really good early learning for positive mental wellbeing, which as a psychologist, I definitely have time for.

This book was recommended by our sons child day care nursery. It’s amazing for getting them to understand the concept of feelings and emotions. Arrived in very good time, undamaged. Would actually buy this for others as a present, well worth the money.

My twins love it. It’s been particularly helpful with trying to talk about big feelings with one of mine and gives him a nice reference for discussing how he feels when he’s not really sure how to explain himself. It is good for little children.

They use this book in preschools to talk about emotions, my little one loves it and it has helped her lots.
On her very first day of “big children school” a few weeks ago, she used what she learned from the book to explain to me how she was feeling about this big milestone.
It’s teaching little kids emotional competence and I’m so glad we have it!

I have been making monsters for a Charity supplying Therapists working with children.
The Charity provided the knitting pattern but I was interested to see the book and especially the facial expressions.
