Mental Arithmetic Book 2: KS2 Maths, Year 4, Ages 8-9
£4.70
Online answers as well as a selection of free supporting downloads are available from the Schofield & Sims website.
Mental Arithmetic provides rich and varied practice to develop pupils’ essential maths skills and prepare them for all aspects of the Key Stage 2 national tests. It may also be used as preparation for the 11+, and with older students for consolidation and recovery.
Structured according to ability rather than age, the series allows children to work at their own pace, building confidence and fluency. Two Entry Tests are available in the Mental Arithmetic Teacher’s Guide to help teachers, parents and tutors to select the appropriate book for each child.
Mental Arithmetic 2 covers the key subject areas of number, measurement, geometry and statistics, including fractions, decimals, times tables, units of length, mass and capacity, geometric shapes and co-ordinates. The book includes:
- 36 one-page tests, each presented in a unique three-part format comprising: questions where use of language is kept to a minimum; questions using number vocabulary; questions focusing on one- and two-step word problems.
- Progress Tests to monitor learning as pupils work through the book
- Check-up Tests to identify any gaps in understanding.
A separate accompanying answer book, Mental Arithmetic 2 Answers (ISBN 9780721708065), contains correct answers to all the questions, making marking quick and easy.

One of my children really struggles with maths. I have bought and worked through these books with him, no surprises, gradual building of confidence and independence. One page each day – at the start of the book they question everything and need a lot of support by the end they are operating pretty independently. Brilliant

Like the range of topics covered.
Would like more practice question per topic to increase fluency.

I think the content it’s bit too easy for my year 3 daughter . So if you looking for deep depths of math for year 3 kids, I would recommended use mental arithmetic book3 .

I was recommended these books to practice as my kid wants to appear for 11+ exams. The books cover an extensive topic and has some really good Maths questions for kids to solve. Even if you don’t wish to appear for 11+ these books are still helpful to improve your mental arithmetic skills and improve you speed. The quality of the papers is good and there are ample number of questions to practice. There is a provision alongside the questions to write your answers and also an achievement chart at the end of the book to track your progress. Books are reasonably priced and cover all the levels from introductory to Level 6.
Only downside which really annoys me is that it does not come with answers. You have to buy the answer book separately. I really hope they publish the answers in the same book as the questions.

Having a private tutor that teaches my kids along with our home learning, the tutor follows the curriculum so their opinion is always great, was suggested these books by tutor and also my sister (teacher) and all my kids have really improved with this range of books. Always better to have something practical for learning then iPads and Phones of course. Aiming to get the kids into a good grammar and I have had good comments home from their teachers already on their improvements at school.
The questions and guides are good, nice selection of topics and very practical and easy to follow even for parents. Not much to say negatively about the books, arrived in no time and will continue to purchase as the kids go through the levels.

I love these Schofield and Sims Mental Arithmetic books. Not only do they come from a trusted brand but they also are packed full of questions for maximum practice.
Every page is split into 3 sections. The first focusing on basic arithmetic skill, the second including more mathematical vocabulary and the final section being longer word/reasoning questions.
As a teacher and tutor I find these to be excellent for my Year 4 students who need to work on speed and accuracy. It quickly helps flag up any tricky areas yet gives plenty of repeated practice once the skill has been mastered. I also find the end of sections useful for assessing areas to focus on with my pupils.
