Online answers as well as a selection of free supporting downloads are available from the Schofield & Sims website.
Mental Arithmetic provides rich and varied practice to develop pupils’ essential maths skills and prepare them for all aspects of the Key Stage 2 national tests. It may also be used as preparation for the 11+, and with older students for consolidation and recovery.
Structured according to ability rather than age, the series allows children to work at their own pace, building confidence and fluency. Two Entry Tests are available in the Mental Arithmetic Teacher’s Guide to help teachers, parents and tutors to select the appropriate book for each child.
Mental Arithmetic 6 extends beyond the Key Stage 2 curriculum, consolidating key subject areas alongside more advanced concepts such as profit and loss, using spreadsheets and conducting mathematical investigations. The book includes:
- 36 one-page tests, each presented in a unique three-part format comprising: questions on number, calculation and algebra, questions on money, measurement, geometry and approximations, longer problem-solving questions.
- Achievement Charts to encourage pupils to monitor their own learning.
- Revision Tests to identify gaps in understanding.
A separate accompanying answer book, Mental Arithmetic 6 Answers (ISBN 9780721708102), contains correct answers to all the questions, making marking quick and easy.

Has the answers but no explanation of how you get to the answers. It’s basically the q book but with answers at the end of every q. Don’t know why they don’t have the answers at the back of the book like other books. Would make more sense.

… Really handy, only problem is that they give only answers but not solutions… It is difficult to understand for those who are preparing without anyone help… If they solve the question it ll b easy to understand…

Excellent for 11 plus preparation.

I was recommended these books to practice as my kid wants to appear for 11+ exams. The books cover an extensive topic and has some really good Maths questions for kids to solve. Even if you don’t wish to appear for 11+ these books are still helpful to improve your mental arithmetic skills and improve you speed. The quality of the papers is good and there are ample number of questions to practice. There is a provision alongside the questions to write your answers and also an achievement chart at the end of the book to track your progress. Books are reasonably priced and cover all the levels from introductory to Level 6.
Only downside which really annoys me is that it does not come with answers. You have to buy the answer book separately. I really hope they publish the answers in the same book as the questions.

Sadly, there are many errors in the answer book – some of the answers are completly different to the question book.
I have reported this as a fault.

This series is great for providing your children with just a few minutes more maths each week. You can see how they are doing and where their weaknesses are. Even if you are not gpod at maths you can let your children get on with these and answers are included. Each test covers a double spread and contains three types of question.
It helps the children well for coping with their SATS. My daughter has never been brilliant at maths but she thinks it’s the best, most fun subject at school and I think that’s because she is used to doing these exercises for fun at home. It helps with confidence.

The schofields and sims books are absolutely amazing. My son uses the mental maths book every evening to keep him on track. He just finished his SATS and is getting ready for the CATS exams he has to take in July. This workbook,I feel,is quite good for this. The seller,Sarah was absolutely delightful. There is an older version of the book, she made sure I was ordering the correct answer book. The answer book I ordered was for the new curriculum. You have to be sure the workbook you have is for the new curriculum if you re buying this answer book.
