First Mental Arithmetic provides rich and varied practice to develop pupils’ essential maths skills at Key Stage 1 and prepare them for all aspects of the national tests.
Structured according to ability rather than age, the series allows children to work at their own pace, building confidence and fluency. Two Entry Tests are available in the First Mental Arithmetic Teacher’s Guide and on the Schofield & Sims website, enabling teachers, parents and tutors to select the appropriate book for each child.
First Mental Arithmetic 3 is aimed at pupils in Year 2 and covers the key subject areas of number, measurement, geometry and statistics, including multiplication, division, partitioning, fractions, number sequences, list, tables and reading scales. The book includes:
- 30 single-page sessions, each presented in a unique three-part format comprising: questions using pictures or simplified language; questions using relevant mathematical vocabulary and symbols; word problems or questions that test understanding of mathematical concepts
- regular Check-up Tests to identify gaps in understanding
- Just Facts questions to help secure knowledge of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts
- a Language of Maths glossary at the start of each book to help develop children’s number vocabulary
- three Achievement Charts to enable children to monitor their own progress.
A separate accompanying answer book, First Mental Arithmetic 3 Answers (ISBN 9780721711713) contains answers to all the questions, making marking simple.

A total of 1-6 bought a set of workbooks, so far my child has done exercise book 3, there is a little pity, exercise books 1 -3 are similar, the repetition rate is too high.

Fantastic book which has helped my daughter build her confidence. I really like the way that this book asks the same questions but in different ways – it really makes the child think. I would highly recommend this series of books to any children needing a confidence boost or just as an additional piece of study material at home.

The Book is great.
The way it was presented can give rise to ordering it in error. Exactly what happened to me.
As I wanted a similar one for my 9 year old. However , when I decided to retun it. Amazon kindly offered that I keep
it while they make the refund to me. How kind..
So now I have reserved it for my four year old until when he old enough to use it.
