This is a most intriguing novel. It is one which takes a step aside from the police procedural and into the Probation Services and the ethics, wisdom, risk and the mercy of releasing those who have murdered into the community albeit with a new identity.
It should be required reading for those involved in the Probation Services and the government department/s who finance said service.

A big but tightly woven tale about the dangers and damage of vengeance: to those on both sides: victims who become perpetrators. It mirrored the kind of vigilante views we hear echoed in the tabloids; balanced these against an empathic insight into the minds, and guilt of the perpetrators. It could be read both ways, but I believe the story favoured the more positive hope of rehabilitation. But I’m just a big softy. As any good writer or reader surely needs to be.

One of my favourite authors who never disappoints. An unusual storyline which created a moral dilemma – sympathy with the bad guys. A gritty story which could easily happen. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Fast paced whodunnit with well rounded characters and storyline. MJ Arlidge has provided yet another exciting book.

A read you do not want to put down

I read this is one sitting. I was hooked. It’s an interesting story about the people who have been given new identities. It’s dark in parts but the storyline is gripping. This is the first book I read from this author. I didn’t figure it out before the end.

What a belter of a book! It had me hooked from the start! I’m sure many of us are angry when child killers are released back into society and given anonymity! This book deals with both sides: the released killers’ remorse or lack of and the years of suffering of victims’ families who are hell bent on revenge! An overworked probation service with its disillusioned staff, coupled with disgruntled ex police officers who worked the child murders ! Who is leaking the new identities of these monsters which leads to their demise?? The author has done a great job of concealing who the culprit is until near the end! This book is even better than her Detective Grace books!

There’s no denying that the premise here is a fascinating one. If you had it in your power to ‘out’ a perpetrator or perpetrators of a particularly heinous crime to the loved ones of their victims, would you do it?
That’s what this book is built around; the mystery being who is passing on the information. The chapters alternate between the characters and, initially, I don’t think this worked particularly well. However, as the book progresses and the characters get more bedded in, a more cohesive narrative does begin to take shape. What we have, in terms of characters, are awful people having done unspeakable acts who are then pursued by people that, although not on the same low rung as their prey, are not particularly nice people themselves. I make that point as it’s important to make a connection to characters and having thoroughly unlikeable people populate the book makes establishing those connections very trying. The hunt to find the person or persons behind the leaks builds nicely and in the absence of knowing precisely (in real life) who is in control of what information and what failsafes are in place, could be entirely plausible.
I like to be entertained by a book. Due to the rather grim subject matter at hand, I can’t say that I found An eye for an eye entertaining but it did offer a well imagined scenario of what just might happen if those responsible for protecting offenders choose to incite vigilante style justice.
