We bought this book to help explain adoption to our nieces and nephews – aged 4-9 – before our little one arrives. We plan to use this book as a catalyst for further questions the children may have, but it is an ideal introduction to the adoption journey our little one – and others – will have already experienced.
Little Stork’s New Home clearly explains the adoption process in a simplified way, following the story of a little hatchling whose birth parents are unable to meet her needs through to her eventual forever home with a pair of storks who can meet her needs. As a same-sex couple, it was a bonus that the genders of the storks the hatchling is placed with are not specified, allowing for possibilities of heterosexual or homosexual parents.
The language level means that younger children can easily follow the story as an adult reads while older children can read independently. Additionally, the beautiful illustrations ensure this is a lovely book and not ‘just’ a teaching aid or icebreaker.
We are delighted with our copies of the book and look forward to sharing them with others, including our little one when he is older and asks questions about his past.

It is nicely illustrated and the story means well but it is trying to cover to my aspects. It rather wordy for this sort of book and focuses too much on the failing of the birth mother.

What a wonderful, important and accessible tale. I bought this for my friend who’s going through the adoption process but had to read it first because the story grabbed me straight away and the illustrations are beautiful. My friend already has a 7 year son and this book opened up a dialogue between them about the new chapter in their lives, which her son had previously found difficult to talk about. They now read it together all the time and it has apparently become a firm favourite.

I bought this book for my brother and his wife who have an adopted daughter aged 12.. they all loved it and said it was really helpful in explaining and talking about worries and questions she had. It is also beautifully illustrated. My mum also read it with her which was lovely for both of them. Am planning on getting one for my cousin who has recently adopted and my friend who is starting fostering … a lovely book!
