I have given this 4 stars simply because it’s Supertato, so I know children will love it. However, personally I’m not overly impressed by this offering. There are definitely lots of better Supertato adventures out there.
The story is based entirely around the veggie’s recital of Jack and the Beanstalk, for a supermarket pantomime. The theme makes for a pretty dull read, in comparison to most of the other Supertato stories. There are of course the usual punchlines, as expected, but definitely nothing laugh out loud funny. Evil Pea doesn’t get up to his usual evil tricks. Supertato doesn’t need to heroically save the day like he usually does. It all just feels a bit flat.
I really hope the authors aren’t going to cash in on the fact that their character is the inspiration behind a new hit CBeebies show and churn out adventure after adventure now, going for quantity over quality. Less is definitely more when it comes to high quality children’s literature. One new Supertato book per year is enough, if it ensures the standards remain high.
This is the first ever Supertato book to be released in hardback, before a cheaper paperback version is available (to my knowledge). Another hint that they may sadly be taking advantage to cash in on the popularity of the Supertato brand right now. I hope I’m wrong.
As I said, children will love it, simply because it’s Supertato, but this definitely feels like one of the weakest books in the series so far (in my opinion).
