Dancing in the Moonlight: Early Years on Stage

£0.20

This is Ronnie Barker’s uproarious, racy and affectionate memoir of the vanished world of the repertory theatre. It is a candid autobiography from the moment as a 19-year-old he threw up his steady job in an Oxford bank for a heady affair with the stage.

I read this book many years ago from my local library. It captures perfectly a bygone way of life for a ‘theatrical’ person. The writing is full of colourful descriptions and dry wit. Haven’t re-read it yet, but am looking forward to sitting down and enjoying it. It’s a book I shall be hanging on to.

I thought the ideal biography of Ronnie would be written in his own words. I was wrong. There are several which are more entertaining. Probably not more accurate, but sometimes the detail of someone’s life (the minutia) is interesting only to them. This gets far too down in the detail for me.

Love this guy. So sad when he retired. So clever in everything he did. I like the fact that there is still some of his work recorded and being shown on TV even now. 24 carat performance every time. This book lets you in on his early life on stage whilst he was learning his craft and the lessons he learnt which stood him in good stead in his later career on television. No-one measures up, the nearest is David Jason, but that is another story. Just love the humour and the fun. I suppose it is because he was enjoying his work all the time that it shone through and made it all the more entertaining for us who watched. My all time favourite funny man, can always make me smile just thinking about him. Priceless.

This book is a great read from one of the funniest men of the 20th century. He also wrote most of his material which is a rarity nowadays.
