The Linguistics of British Sign Language: An Introduction
£40.40£41.80 (-3%)
This is the first detailed explanation of the way British Sign Language works and is the product of many years’ experience of research and teaching sign linguistics to deaf and hearing people. It assumes no previous knowledge of linguistics or sign language, and is not structured around traditional headings such as phonology, morphology and syntax. Instead it is set out in such a way as to help learners and their teachers understand the linguistic principles behind the language. There are sections on BSL grammar and also on the use of BSL, including social acceptability in signing, variation, and poetry and humour in BSL. Technical terms and linguistic jargon are kept to a minimum, and the text contains many examples from English, BSL, and other spoken and sign languages. The book is amply illustrated and contains exercises, as well as a reading list for further study. An accompanying 90-minute DVD is available from Talk With Sign Books. I am currently studying level 6 BSL and this book was recommended by my tutor. It arrived within a couple of days in perfect condition. The book itself is a must for anyone wanting to further their knowledge and understanding of such a complex language.
I do a lot of internet shopping and would definitely purchase from this seller again due to accurate product description, competitive price and speed of delivery.

A useful guide but the print quality is incredibly poor. The pictures aren’t that helpful as they are poor resolution and therefore handshapes are hard to decipher.
Disappointing for the price. It’s so important that the deaf community is supported and this book goes some way towards explaining linguistics and achieving that, but it’s disappointed the printing and picture quality was not invested in.

Once you get your head around the introductory chapter, which appears quite daunting, it’s a relief that the rest is easier to follow and gives detailed descriptions of the various aspects of BSL

Interesting read, but a bit ‘heavy going’. I feel. Most suitable for learning BSL at a higher level. Helpful for understanding syntax.

This is an excellent book going through all the aspects of BSL linguistics. I found the book easy to follow, and in particular my BSL teacher taught pretty much the same syllabus for my Level 3 exam. An understanding of linguistics might seem daunting at first, but it really helps you think about signs when signing them, and has increased how accurately I sign which makes sense linguistically. I had learned Level 3 signing before and was quite amazed how understanding linguistics gave me such a strong foundation to accurately sign.
Well recommended for anyone doing Level 3 and above

I love this book. It’s very useful and it is suitable for BSL Level 3 or above. This author wrote her book – it’s very well research.

I am currently studying my level 3 in BSL and this book is brilliant- it clearly explains many forms of BSL, signs there isn’t a particular word in English and how to use them and the social contexts of BSL e.g. How a man/ woman or child might sign differently etc.
Would recommend this book to anyone learning or wanting to know more about the beautiful language of BSL

Excellent book which gives a clear insight into the construction and use of British Sign Language. The first few pages are difficult and I had to read them slowly in order to understand how various abbreviations and symbols were to be used during the book. However, one I’d got through that I found the book interesting and well written. I would say this book is suitable for level 3 BSL learners.
