Parents and children, at any level, can understand and enjoy reading these books together. They include instructional text and cover a range of Makaton Signs carefully chosen to help babies and young children express their needs and begin to interact with people around them. The following signs are included; Bk1: mum, dad, baby, teddy, drink, milk, eat, biscuit, cat, dog, bird, tree, car, house, potty, nappy, bath, cuddle, book, read, bed, sleep, hello, goodbye, good, bad, what, where, here, there, yes, no, help and look. Bk2: boy, girl, flower, butterfly, bus, aeroplane, fish, rabbit, ice cream, cake, ball, doll, swim, run, jump, kick, ride a bicycle, friend, toilet, wash, brush hair, brush teeth, more, please, finished, thank you, hot, cold, little, big, my, your, sorry and want. The Makaton Symbols presented with written words are also a great way to build children’s confidence whilst learning to read. Text is a very abstract concept for young children to grasp but by using iconic symbols together with words the process becomes much more intuitive. My First Makaton Symbols and Signs Complete First Series also carries the Makaton Quality Mark, an accreditation reserved for materials that have been approved by The Makaton Charity and which meet criteria set to a high standard of translation.

This book was very helpful.

I ordered these for my little boy who has autism and doesn’t talk. Great for special needs children and learning how to sign for the first time. I’ve been doing some signs that support workers have shown me but just wanted to better myself to learn more for my son and help on picture exchange from photos to makaton black and white picture symbols.

I absolutely love these books! It has been many years since I learned Makaton and I have forgotten a lot of it due to the fact that I have not had to use it. Now ‘I need to use it, these books are easy to read/learn so helps me out when I am unable to attend weekly Makaton classes. They are great books and i would highly recommend them.

Got it for my 2 year old who has verbal communication problems – it’s helped ease a lot of his frustration as he can now sign words and let us know what he wants. My 5 year old loves learning the words too ????

A perfect beginners guide to Makaton signs. I ordered it as a Special Needs Co-ordinator in an Infant School working with a increasing number of language delayed ASD pupils. For this purpose it has been very good. Maybe in future a more school centred volume might be useful, but for teaching us the basics it has been great. It has also been really useful to me as a Mummy whose little one is a huge fan of Mr Tumble and Something Special. Now we can keep up with Justin!

The books are nice and colourful and make learning the signs fun. Once you have learnt a few signs you can expand the learning e.g. Use the sign for girl but then add big or little. Sign ‘bus’ but add ‘red’.
I think they are a little on the expensive side and as they are made for children they could be a little more durable for when the child is looking at them by themselves.

This is just what I was looking for. It’s perfect for teaching both me and by little boy the very basics of makaton. We are both learning fast with these clear images. Once we’ve mastered this, we can move on to more complicated stuff but this is all we need for a long while. Thank you – brilliant book. It has made our family life easier. I particularly like the fact that despite not talking, my son can now have good manners and say ‘please’ ‘Thank you’ and ‘Sorry’! It makes things more socially acceptable!
