Half of this book is devoted to the events leading up to the start of the American Civil War. Circumstances are explained and the reader is left to draw their own conclusions. The contrast between rural, labour-intensive economy and urban, manufacturing economies of the South and North respectively is one suggested contributor to the conflict.

The centrality of slavery in the attitudes of the two sides is well covered. The significant impact of Lincoln’s Emancipation Act during the war is brought out, as is the initial ambivalence to abolition for a variety of reasons. I was pleased to read about the North’s naval supremacy being given credit, but the reasons for this were only briefly described. The tone is conversational rather than didactic and made for engaging reading. The aftermath of the war is covered sketchily compared to the lead up, but does cover the period until Congress withdraws troops from the Southern, seceding states. Credit is given to the Confederate side for prolonging a war where they were at significant disadvantage and their leading generals who literally outmaneouvered the Union generals on several occasions.
