Bought this to accompany the Ric Burns TV Series, and was not disappointed. This is very much a military history, and the author writes as he speaks, with a broad Southern accent, but he does have a comprehensive grasp of his subject and writes well

Excellent history looking at the war from the Confederate side

This is the second time I have read the book. I cannot praise if enough. I am an Englishman but live in Liverpool whose links to the civil wars late unpleasantness is still evident today.Icannot recommend this highly enough.one word though if you don’t reside in the US then you are unlikely to have a mind’s eye as to where many of the places are. A map is useful as the books maps are poor

I was loned all three of these books, and I have read this one so far, and now on the second. There is for me something about these books that keeps me going back to find out more, the detail is fantastic that I can almost put myself there, screaming at the commanders to push forward, or stop !! run now!! all with the benefit of hindsight of course, as you get both views from the commanders minds view and the political ideas.
I tried to buy these books from my friend who loaned them to me, obvioulsy he wouldn’t sell, so I brought my own the next day. such is the interest. Sometimes they get a bit detailed, and I have to refer back to the maps, or get the USA road atlas out to see where they are talking about, bearing in mind I have ventured to the USA and part of the areas concerned, where the main battles were fought. However I never went there to visit battle fields or anything like that.
I would thoroughly reccommend these books to anyone interested in the art of war and the men who decide where to fight a battle.

A monster of a conflict. State vs. state…brother vs. brother. Shelby Foote tells it like it was. A long, bloody monstrous waste of human life. Told in three volumes it covers the war from conflict to conflict, from both sides. the heroes and villain’s alike, everyone’s there.
The battle’s, the politics and the characters, Shelby Foote has done his homework and produced a masterpiece. One down , two to go , I bet you can’t wait…

A most excellent account of the American Civil War for which Mr Foote paid the iron price. Namely 20 years of solid study & scribbling.
I read all three volumes on my Kindle which I feel made the undertaking easier but restricted somewhat my ability to flick back and forth to check over details. This is something that I guarantee you will want to do, if only to recount Mr Foote’s enthusiastic account of some particular event or other.
I would advise arming yourself with a set of maps to better follow the action. I managed to find a second hand copy of the Official Military Atlas of the Civil War which was very useful, albeit a tad on the large side.
There are numerous reasons why Mr Foote’s tome is rated so highly by so many people, and I believe it’s primarily because all three books are such a pleasure to read. I was so impressed that I asked Santa for a boxed set, and this now sits on my bookshelf waiting. This is history at it’s best written with a passion and clarity which deserves 5 stars all day long.

A fantastic book which was sold as being in very good condition. On arrival it was stained ,worn and looked like if had been nibbled at the corners by mice or worse !! I had bought it to replace a worn copy but ended up throwing this copy straight in the bin. Waste of money and time- would never use World of books again. Avoid in one word.

First came across Shelby Foote through Ken Burns documentary.
A true gentleman with an understanding of the contemporary mindsets of both sides.
