So much interesting information in here. And a fun book to dip into over time as I do his other books.

I love audiobooks but I can’t listen to this guy and it has ruined what I hoped would be an interesting read. Why can’t someone tell an author not to narrate their own book when their voice is this irritating? His phrasing is doing my head in.

Some may find it heavy reading. But this book has sound evidence based advice. Thoroughly recommend it. The author does Podcasts too.

This is not a get healthy quick gimmick book. This is science at its best, teaching us why and how to eat our way into a healthy old age. Gregor is an incredible author and researcher. He cites over 13000 scientific papers for this book. All profit go to charity as well. Get it, you won’t regret it, our health is the most important thing we have.

As always the focus here is on diet and lifestyle not drugs. Some anti-ageing drugs are touched on but if you are looking for a drug based approach to ageing there are better books for you. As the anti-ageing field moves pretty fast recent findings like Taurine’s effect on lifespan are not included.

This book is a fantastic reference guide to anyone wanting to make dietary/lifestyle interventions to ameliorate ageing. It is a safety first approach which is what you want if you are trying not to die! Content is similar to How Not to Die (his previous book) but the focus is on ageing mechanisms rather than disease mechanisms (although they often overlap). If you want to chase many of the references be prepared for a long read. Also be prepared to read with a phone/tablet/computer in your other hand as many of the topics are expanded on in video form (for free) due to limits on page count by publishers.

The writing is funny when it wants to be and written at a level appropriate for the average educated person. The amount of nutrition research packed into this book is nothing short of astounding.

It is an extremely well-researched book with over 1300 citations and links to the associated research papers.

The first part of the book is quite technical and I think Dr Greger admits as much, but the information is refreshingly accessible and it helps that the book is peppered with doses of humour throughout – the section on spermidine had me in stitches.

I especially appreciated, at the end of each section, a summary of the main learning points and the actionable advice that describes how one can implement the information with the foods to eat, or not eat.
I read it from beginning to end but it equally works as a reference book where you can dip in to whichever topic of longevity that takes your interest.

    What I found interesting

I particular enjoyed reading about the effects of IGF-1 in its role in cancer and the detail about Laron Syndrome. Already, I have also acted on the information about quercetine and fistine and found the information on cellular senescence “zombie cells” to be fascinating.

There have been some reviews about the paper quality and font size which has caused people to give low ratings of the book. I do not find the font small. The paper thickness and binding is not as good as the previous book “How Not to Diet” but it isn’t a dramatic difference.

Much of the information in the book is also available on Dr Greger’s Nutrition Facts website; however, the book distills the information with lucid and engaging writing which makes it much more enjoyable. I think it is great that all proceeds from buying his books goes to charity and I for one don’t think the book tries to push an agenda – maybe the agenda of wanting people to live long and healthy lives perhaps.

The book snake-oil gurus (and the anti-aging “industry”) will hate. The good Doctor and his team have not only outdone the number of references in his earlier books, he’s given us links so we can read behind his summaries, ourselves. Not to be confused with “How not to Die” – an entirely different (but just as brilliantly covered) topic.
