After a year in captivity, a kidnapped child escapes—only to reveal horrific truths that lead her psychologist on a race against time in this thriller from New York Times bestselling author Mike Omer.
When eight-year-old Kathy Stone turns up on the side of the road a year after her abduction, the world awaits her harrowing story. But Kathy doesn’t say a word. Traumatized by her ordeal, she doesn’t speak at all, not even to her own parents.
Child therapist Robin Hart is the only one who’s had success connecting with the girl. Robin has been using play therapy to help Kathy process her memories. But as their work continues, Kathy’s playtime takes a grim turn: a doll stabs another doll, a tiny figurine is chained to a plastic toy couch. All of these horrifying moments, enacted within a Victorian doll house. Every session, another toy dies.
But the most disturbing detail? Kathy seems to be playacting real unsolved murders.
Soon Robin wonders if Kathy not only holds the key to the murders of the past but if she knows something about the murders of the future. Can Robin unlock the secrets in Kathy’s brain and stop a serial killer before he strikes again? Or is Robin’s work with Kathy putting her in the killer’s sights?

I thought half way through I had figured out the plot, then about 75% of the way through I thought I had been mistaken and decided on another ending, and 95% of the way through, there was a HUGE plot twist. I didn’t expect it AT ALL! It was super interesting g reading all about child therapy and I loved how you could unravel the mystery together.
It loses a star because it’s slow to get into, and the writing at the beginning is almost overly descriptive.
Would definitely recommend!

I enjoyed this book. An interesting concept and different from the usual detective type novel.
It dragged a little in parts but I would certainly read another by this author.

This book had me sucked in at page 2. There was always something happening to keep you interested and it was so easy to read. I honestly thought a few times I knew who the baddie was, how wrong was I. I picked this book out of a few options I had on Amazon First reads, really happy I did. Will definitely be looking at the authors other books

Only just started reading this book, so not far into the story. What I have read so far has kept me interested and enjoying it so I give it a 4

This was an Amazon First Read and I am so glad I picked it. There was suspense from start to finish.
I did not guess the second perpetrator and I was sure it was someone else. Really great ending. Definitely recommend this book and the author. I have not previously read any of his work but I most certainly will now.
The best thriller I have read in a long time and really worthy of the five stars!

This book is beautifully written and kept me hooked from beginning to end. It’s a story that you read and you play detective and I was certain I’d worked it out, but I was shocked at the end, and I love that in a book. The book was very well written and will forever be a memorable book.
I love that it was based on recent years and it showed the importance of understanding how trauma can affect people and how different people share their trauma.

What an amazing read.. it had everything I wanted from a good thriller, it kept me on the edge on my seat, I had my “oh god no” moment that is essential intact I think I had 3 or 4 in the story, it was fast pasted. I 100% didn’t get who the killer was.. and I had 3 guesses and was still wrong!! And I was so invested in Robin and Kathy from the get go. That’s one of the things I love about Mike Omer writing.. I always care about the characters and that pulls me into the story and makes what’s happening more emotional. There was a slow burn romance which added a little something extra as that’s a complete different emotion and also I feel added some urgency in some of the situations that would have been there anyway, but in a different way. All In all I loved it!! It is a must read.
The next part of my review is a spoiler and is for any one with triggers who is thinking of NOT reading, if this isn’t you don’t read on.
Even though this story start with a child abduction for over a year, There is absolutely no child sexual abuse in this book. There is no graphic mistreatment of children. The victims are all adults. I hope this helps and that you give it a try even if you have child abduction trigger as it’s a really good story and watching Kathy grow and deal with being away from her parent for so long was brilliant. She as a character is really strong.

Very good book and sneaked off at every opportunity to read it!! Needless to say nothing got done round the house, and dinner took forever to prepare for reading. Would definitely recommend to readers who love thrillers or police books. Very well written, short chapters (so you can sneak in one more) and extremely engaging. Five stars.
