Just as she’s about to give up hope on finding a new dream job, an offer comes that she can’t refuse, managing a set of luxury wooden cabins… and opening just in time for Christmas!
As she gets to work decorating the cabins, and hanging lights on the fir trees, Lottie can’t believe her luck. That is until the arrival of Blake Dempster, a moody but handsome hiking expert, who threatens to bring down her festive joy. But never one to shy away from a challenge, Lottie is determined to change Blake’s mind about all things festive.

Brilliant!

It’s only fairly recently that I discovered Julie Shackman and her ‘Scottish Escapes’ series. There are currently five books and I have only managed to read a couple of them to date but I hope to read the rest of them when I have a chance. The most recent release in the series is called ‘The Highland Lodge Getaway’ and it was released on 20th October 2023. It’s another cracking addition to a cracking series. I thoroughly enjoyed reading ‘The Highland Lodge Getaway’ but more about that in a bit.
It took me next to no time to get into the story. In fact by the time I got to the end of the first page, I knew that I was going to become addicted to the story and that I was going to enjoy the book. Part of the reason why I loved the story so much has to do with the main character, who is called Lottie Grant. Lottie is a lovely young lady, who ended up feeling more like a friend than a character in a book. I couldn’t help but warm to her. Lottie has been through the mill a bit with the sad loss of her father and then she has the rug pulled out from underneath her so to speak. I just wanted her to get the ‘happy ever after’ ending that she so deserved. I developed a desperate need to find out how the story panned out. The more of the book that I read, the more I wanted to read and the quicker the pages seemed to turn. I was so wrapped up in the story and in the lives of the different characters that I didn’t realise just how quickly the time was passing and how quickly I was getting through the book. All too quickly I got to the end. I found ‘The Highland Lodge Getaway’ to be a delight to read from start to finish.
‘The Highland Lodge Getaway’ is superbly written but then I don’t expect anything less from Julie. Julie has an easy going writing style that is easy to get used to and easy to get along with. In fact reading this book felt more like a chat between friends rather than reading a book- I hope that makes sense. Julie certainly knows how to grab the reader’s attention and draw them into what proves to be one heck of a story. Julie clearly cares about her characters and this shines through in the very vivid and realistic way in which she describes them. Julie makes her characters seem just as real as you and I. I love the way in which the author makes the reader feel as though they are part of the story and at the heart of the action. ‘The Highland Lodge Getaway’ is a story full of love, full of hope, full of uplifting moments and full of romance, which is guaranteed to leave the reader feel as though they have had a hug from a mug of hot chocolate – in other words, the reader is left feeling all warm and fuzzy inside.
In short, I thoroughly enjoyed reading ‘The HIghland Lodge Getaway’ and I would recommend it to other readers. I will certainly be reading more of Julie’s work in the future. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a very well deserved 5* out of 5*.
