Times Fables: Learn your times tables in as little as a week [3rd Edition]

Many children find it hard to learn their times tables. This book makes it really fun, by teaching the times tables through stories that have been specially developed with visual learners in mind. Recommended for ages 5+

Traditionally, children have been encouraged to learn times tables by rote. And while some children are able to learn their times tables with ease, many others struggle. This can have a devastating effect on a child’s learning, often translating into a mistaken belief by the child that they are not good at mathematics.

Written by Jessie Wilson and first published in 2017, Times Fables® is an award-winning right-brain system that helps children memorise times tables with ease. Inspiration for the book came when the author was trying to teach her daughter her times tables. Thinking back to her own school days, she recalled that her ‘favourite’ multiplication was 7 times 8. Why? Because she lived in house number 56. A lightbulb went off in her head, and she started wondering if the solution to her daughter’s times tables woes might be as simple as adding some memory “pegs” to the multiplication facts to aid recall. And with this, Times Fables® was born…

I love this book! I have been struggling to teach my son times tables for so long now. Stumbled across this book and thought, what have I got to loose?! Well, it worked. Being able to picture the differnt characters and story behind each one suddenly changed times tables into something fun for a change. Would highly recommend. I even find myself referring to the story to remember my times tables!

I’ve struggled with Maths with my 7yo son for a while, and to help in all areas he needs to know his times tables. I bought wall charts, used TT rockstars and as a last resort I tried to teach him by rote but he has ADHD and just gets bored and distracted. It was really disheartening hearing him say he’ll never get it and that he is stupid. I bought this book as a last resort, it had mixed reviews and I wasn’t sure about it.
It arrived today. I don’t know what it is but this technique is MAGIC, we read 4 pages and he just gets it!!! He was smiling and asking to take it to school with him and wanted to do more pages. It may not work for all kids as they all learn in different ways but this 100% works for my son. I’m excited to see what he remembers in the morning. I recommend giving it a try. It’s worth the 7.99 and if it doesn’t work for your child it’ll definitely work for someone elses, so you can pass it on.

I have three children aged 6,8 and 9. Prior to this purchase my 6 year old could do her 10s, 5s and almost 2s properly. My 8 year old and 9 year old were good at 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, 9s, 10s, 11s. The more difficult to work out quickly 6s, 7s, 8s were always tricky for them. My children are bright little buttons and I am an ex teacher (Maths if you would believe it) but always struggled with remembering my times tables when I was younger and getting them to do mental maths (Mathletics and Times Tables Rock Stars online as set by the school) has been a bit of a challenge recently through lockdown. I looked for maths workbooks and came across this on Amazon… I know im a visual learner so thought id give this a go, especially since it is only on the 3,4,6,7,8 and 9 times tables (the trickier ones)

It arrived quickly in great condition and while none of my children were too enthusiastic to read it themselves, while my older two were outside I sat down with my little bookworm 6 year old. We read the first few pages and then went over them again. We read a few more pages and then went through them from the beginning again… we finally finished the last few pages and went through the whole book to see if she could remember them. In total spent about 20 minutes reading together.

When my older two came in from outside I did them a maths quiz – 15 timed questions – and said they could have a chocolate button for every one they got right. They all tried their best. My 9 year old scored 11, my 8 year old scored 5 and my 6 year old experimental child who had never once answered any of these questions correctly before in her life got 14/15! Absolute Miracle. My older two – a bit put out that the littlest knew her times tables better than them spent a bit of time reading it with me and over the course of the next 4 days now they absolutely love showing off that they know all their times tables! Weve had video calls from their dad, grandad, aunty and nannie who have all quizzed them and been wow’d that they have learned them in such a short space of time. Now they love pop up maths quizzes… They havent got any wrong or forgotten any. Its the best money ive spent EVER.

-The concept of the book is based on the fact that some people retain information better through visual aid… just like people memorising a deck of cards or a series of images… by making up stories about them.
    – Dr Sven is my favourite character 100%
    – My eldest and youngest love the fact they have an 8 year old sister for the squared numbers page for number 8…

    Massive thanks

So far I am finding this book magical!

Our daughter does not find math easy and as a result she does not enjoy. This evening she wanted to finish the book because she was enjoying herself and without trying she had mastered half of the times tables.

Our younger daughter loved the number bond book. I hope the author is writing more visual learning books. Time, Money and shapes would be wonderful please! Also carrying over 10 for long multiplication. In fact any math topic pls! So many children are neurodiverse – it could help so many.

Perhaps the book could be turned into a film?

My goodness the options are endless and could help so many.

Thank you so much from all us struggling parents – you should feel so proud x

My daughter is 12. She has been trying to learn times tables since Year 2. I’ve tried various methods with minimal success. This book arrived this morning, we read it through together once, and she got the concept immediately! She totally resonated with the character and could see all the numbers in the characters straight away and was able to easily remember all the rhymes. Then she could recall all the number facts and got all the answers correct. This book is an ABSOLUTE GAME CHANGER. Buy it, buy it, buy it!!!!

And then buy a copy for all your friends!

Thank you, Author Jessie Wilson, you are a mathematical genius and SUPER-KIND to share this book. We love it!
