Your behaviour is the only behaviour over which you have absolute control. To change your children’s behaviour, you first need to change your own.
The culture of any home is determined by the parents. If you can remain unflappably calm in the face of every supermarket tantrum and sarcastic eye-roll, order will soon follow.
Here, Paul Dix – Britain’s leading children’s behaviour expert – reveals how to build a culture of calm consistency into your home, starting today. He explains how you really can maintain a sense of Zen-like serenity in the face of even the most chaotic behaviour, from school-gate screaming matches to mealtime childmageddon. And he offers a set of simple strategies for coolly getting the behaviour you want – without a barked instruction, deranged punishment or cold, hard cash-bribe in sight.
His tried-and-tested method will change what your child does by first changing what you do. You will never need to raise your voice again.

This covers similar ideas to other parenting methods but with tweaks that look like they’ll resolve some of the issues we’ve had with those. Everything is explained clearly and simply, and it feels like change is very achievable. Would definitely recommend to any parent.

I can’t believe I had never thought about the rules of my house before I read this book. We have since sat down as a family and established 3 simple rules so we all know – ‘This Is How We Do It Here’. It works, the rules can be applied to everything. I no longer shout up the stairs when dinner is ready or pass the buck to my partner when behaviour gets wobbly. I can already see huge improvements in all our behaviour as a collective family unit. This book is a must have for anyone who looks after Children.

This book was really insightful. I love that it has clear and tangible advice and examples of what to do in different situations. I’m looking forward to putting it into practice!

I read this book in a few days – and then reread it instantly. I’m halfway through for the second time.
It feels very empowering but be warned – it may unpack some emotions you might not enjoy. eg. feeling like a bad parent, that you’ve made mistakes, and also feeling perhaps sad about the way you were parented. But you now have some tools to deal with that and make things better.
(Top tip – if you’re rushing to implement everything, the final chapter tells you expressly not to do this – very much a ‘read the recipe to the end before beginning’ kind of tip!)

With either my parent hat or professional hat on, this book adds to Paul’s previous ones and gives clear, rational approaches so children & young people are getting our best parenting skills, thought about at times of rational, calm moments. Naturally, this leads to their best responses back to us and others every day.
Lots for everyone to take from this book.
Looking forward to what he writes next.

I had no idea how much harm I was causing my children when I was simply trying to teach them right from wrong.
This book has totally opened my eyes and transformed my thinking – ultimately it has saved my children’s self esteem and the relationship I have with them.

Another great book by Paul Dix! It’s an honest and informative read encouraging good parenting but also sharing where he tried and failed and learnt from it. Love his style of writing and his wise but down to earth guidance.
Paul is highly respected across the education sector and now this book speaks specifically to parents from a parent.

This book has transformed the way I look at the behaviour of my children and how I can plan to support better behaviour, and also how to respond rather than shouting!!
It’s made our family home and life so much better, I feel far more connected to my children
