Phonetic transcriptions in Ukrainian only – no phonetic transcriptions in English version. Otherwise it is really excellent.

Collins Ukrainian Essential Dictionary is rock-bottom terrible. Rather than actually producing a good bilingual dictionary, Collins just bought the rights to a Ukrainian-produced dictionary, which contains neither stress marks nor information about declension of nouns or conjugation of verbs, which Ukrainians naturally don’t need, but which are essential (sic) for English-speaking learners of Ukrainian.

As a collection of Ukrainian vocabulary notes down this is a comprehensive book. As a useful dictionary for English speaking students of Ukrainian it is not helpful as it doesn’t contain phonetics for the language. You can see the Ukrainian equivalent in Cyrillic (great if you read fluently, not good if you can’t) but there’s no help with speaking.
Collins – you times need work.

Good mini-dictionary BUT it was originally designed for Ukrainian speakers not English speakers. One reviewer wants phonetic transcriptions, but since the Cyrillic alphabet is consistent, and not difficult to learn, what’s really needed are stress-marks on each Ukrainian word. Usually an acute accent is used, and that’s all that’s needed to tell a foreigner how a word should sound. Other information usually included (if foreigners are in mind) is how the plural is formed for each word and the genitive case. With the wave of refugees from Ukraine, Collins has rushed to get *something* out, and well done for that. This is far better than nothing, but if English speakers will continue to learn Ukrainian, something different will be needed.

I bought this book for my Ukrainian friend, who is learning to speak English. She normally uses Google translate on her phone to help her communicate with people, but she is not allowed to use her phone at work. So she uses this book instead. She said it has been very helpful in her conversations with people.

This is an undoubtedly complete and extensive dictionary, however, the book itself is very small and the writing is way too small to read! I use glasses for reading, but when using this dictionary I have to wear TWO pairs, one on top of the other, in order to make anything out at all.
