There was a lot in this books about the science behind reading and theory background. Seeing as that’s part of the title I understand why but I was hoping for much more support going forward if how to improve reading in practice. I struggled to engage with this book.

Fantastic book explaining the importance of reading and how vita it is to teach all children to be able to decode so that they can extract meaning from text. The book is accessible to all and is a must-read for all teachers.

This is an exceptionally important text in the science of reading repertoire. A must read for all teachers regardless of the age taught. Whether you’re at the start of your journey teaching reading, or an experienced practitioner, this book will offer a wealth of knowledge and skill that can be taken and used for the benefit of children everywhere. Well done Christopher Such!

It’s hard to summarise how important and effective this book is – it’s a must-read for all primary teachers, but especially English leads/SLT. Having read this and worked to change my school’s approach to suit, I couldn’t go back to the carousel approach or teaching reading skills all separately! Another similar, fantastic read that builds on this nicely is “Reading Reconsidered” (Lemov).

This book can only be described as seminal. Written by a teacher for teachers – it is a concise, practical must-have for everyone involved in the teaching of reading. Which is everyone involved in schools, by the way. Everyone! Such explains the why, guides the how & helps us guard against the lethal mutations, all with clarity & care. Every chapter closes with: In a nutshell, Other implications for the classroom, Qs for professional discussion, Retrieval quiz & Further reading. You can use it immediately. And you really should! The clarity with which Such writes is incredible. Those who find reading a struggle, are time poor, lack the inclination or all of the above can (& should!) devour this. The result of an expert in the teaching of reading, writing a book about the teaching of reading!

Having heard Chris Such on various podcasts I was struck by his clarity and passion for reading. I’ve shared this book with the staff team and we have remodelled our approach to all aspects of reading. Clear and concise, well researched and full of practical advice and ideas. Far and away the best book I’ve come across in this area.
