The funny, moving and uplifting new novel from Ruth Jones, co-creator of Gavin & Stacey and author of the Sunday Times bestsellers Never Greener and Us Three.
Grace is about to turn ninety and she doesn’t want parties or presents or fuss. She just wants a quiet celebration: her daily swim in the sea and a cup of tea with granddaughter Elin and great-granddaughter Beca. More than anything, she wants to heal the family rift that’s been breaking her heart for decades.
And to do that she must find her daughter, Alys – the only person who can help to put things right.
But thirty years is a long time.
And many words have been left unsaid.
So is it too late now to heal the pain of the past?
This is a story about mothers and daughters: the love inherent in that bond and the heartache that miscommunication can bring. More than anything, it’s about the importance of being true to oneself. Meet Grace, Alys, Elin and Beca – a family you’ll come to know, and to love.

This story gripped from the beginning and I could not put it down. The ending was so unexpected, emotional and heartbreaking as well as uplifting.
Ruth Jones told a story of Grace as a beautiful woman who was inspirational and left me wishing I had a Grace in my life.

This is not the type of book I would normally read but I’m really glad I have. it’s a story to make you laugh and cry in equal measure the characters are all beautifully drawn and very likable despite their flaws and the twists and turns keep on coming right until the end. A rare 5 Stars from me.

There is so much to like about this book I really don’t know where to start. I’ve never read a book by Ruth before but I had another lined up before I reached halfway in this one. A fantastic heartwarming and heartbreaking book.

This was amazing from start to finish! Loved it, will be ordering the other two straight away. I really never expected it to be as good as it was as a Kenfig Hill girl loved all the Welsh culture in it.
Beautifully written characters, real people with real flaws. Excellent story with believable and heart breaking twists. Devoured it on the beach in Mexico and finished it on a high!

I loved this book. The story unfolded by going from present to past and back again – a story of family and different generations.

This heart-warming story about Grama Grace and her descendants is eventful and fraught with misunderstanding. Grace, in her 90th year, certainly doesn’t act her age and her home by the sea in Dylan’s Quay has been a refuge for her grand-daughter Elin and Elin’s daughter Beca throughout their lives. Elin’s uptight attitude contrast dramatically with Grace’s laid-back life, while Beca struggles to cope with her mother’s demands as she begins to discover what she wants from life. But one person is missing. Grace’s daughter Alys had run away from home in her teens only returning briefly to leave Elin with Grace.
The reader is given windows into the thoughts and experience of each woman, but some of their secrets are only revealed later in the plot. It is possible to empathise with each of them in some way but also to despair of any forgiveness for the irresponsible Alys. Were their circumstances the reasons for their mistakes or is it just their different personalities?
I particularly liked the dynamic Soozi, Beca’s friend, a talented singer who says what she thinks, usually accompanied by swearing. A genuine young woman who warms to the whole of Beca’s family, she has a positive affect on all of them.
I was not surprised to discover Ruth Jones is a gifted writer creating realistic characters who draw you into their stories. Any mother or daughter will identify with many of the situations in this book and be encouraged by the final denouement.
