Jung’s Analytical Psychology is not easy to read, let alone grasp. Yet, the effort is worthwhile as Jung’s writings, which throws a spotlight on many aspects of the human condition, are as relevant today as when they were first written. Singer’s book is a classic and she proves, chapter by chapter, that under her guidance the reader will gradually gain confidence and insight into the subject matter. I believe that her main strength is that she writes primarily as an analyst and employs her extensive case work experience to flesh out the theoretical points. Interestingly, likewise the motivation to develop theory for Jung was primarily to assist his clients. There are so many good points to be found in this book. For example Singer pushes the boundaries by proposing that we need to confront the shadow in the collective unconscious of the nation. This could be the antidote to war mongering and a road to peace. Interestingly, as this book was written well before the “Me Too Movement”, there is a somewhat old fashioned view of women’s role in the world. But the author is conscious of the contradictions (p.261) and notes that even after all the developments, it is still a man’s world. However, insightfully she notes “But we are standing on the brink of momentous change”. I loved her point that “Some people come to psychotherapy to absolve themselves of the responsibility to come to grips with their own reality”. This illustrates for me that in addition to having a firm and comprehensive grasp of the teachings of Jung, she is at heart a therapist who deals in the real world. While most of the book is pretty easy to read, personally I found Chapter 13, which deals with Jung’s approach to Religion rather difficult to understand. That said, this is the book to read if you wish to become immersed in the teachings of C.G. Jung.
