  • Heightened Genre and Women’s Filmmaking in Hollywood: The Rise of the Cine-fille

Despite the widely publicised prejudice faced by women in Hollywood, since around 1990 a significant minority of female directors have been making commercially and culturally impactful films there across the full range of genres. This book explores movies by filmmakers Amy Heckerling, Nora Ephron, Nancy Meyers, Catherine Hardwicke, Sofia Coppola, Kimberly Peirce, Kathryn Bigelow and Greta Gerwig, including many which are still critically neglected or derided, seeing them as offering a new understanding of genre filmmaking. That is, like many other contemporary films but in a striking proportion within the smaller set of mainstream movies by women, this body of work revels in a heightened genre status that allows its authors to simultaneously address ‘intellectual’ cinephilic pleasures and bodily-emotive ones. Arguing through close analysis that these films demonstrate the inseparability of such strategies of engagement in contemporary genre cinema, Heightened Genre reclaims women’s mainstream filmmaking for feminism through a recalibration of genre theory itself.

  • Hellraisers: The Life and Inebriated Times of Burton, Harris, O’Toole and Reed

    08

‘God put me on this earth to raise sheer hell.’ Richard Burton
‘I was a sinner. I slugged some people. I hurt many people. And it’s true, I never looked back to see the casualties.’ Richard Harris
‘Booze is the most outrageous of all drugs, which is why I chose it.’ Peter O’Toole
‘I don’t have a drink problem. But if that was the case and doctors told me I had to stop I’d like to think I would be brave enough to drink myself into the grave.’ Oliver Reed

This is the story of four of the greatest thespian boozers who ever walked – or staggered – off a film set into a pub. It’s a story of drunken binges of near biblical proportions, parties and orgies, broken marriages, drugs, riots and wanton sexual conquests. They got away with it because of their extraordinary acting talent and because the public loved them. They were truly the last of a breed, the last of the movie hellraisers.

  • Hit and Run: How Jon Peters and Peter Guber Took Sony for a Ride in Hollywood

    03
Hit and Run tells the improbable and often hilarious story of how two film packagers well known for spending other people’s money and ripping off credit for other people’s work went on a deliberate campaign to reinvent themselves as studio executives. With the exception of Batman, Jon Peters and Peter Guber were barely involved with the most successful films they “produced.” Steven Spielberg wouldn’t allow them on the set of The Color Purple, and they werre on the set of Rain Man only once, briefly. With the help of one of Michael Milken’s top lieutenants, they succeeded. It was the most audacious sales job of their careers: This unlikely team got Sony to give them the richest deal in Hollywood history.

  • Hollywood: The Oral History

    05

Hollywood: The Oral History covers the history of Hollywood from the Silent era up to the 21st century.

What makes this book unique from any other survey of Hollywood’s history is that it is the history of an art form through the words of those people who created it – from Harold Lloyd to Katharine Hepburn to Warren Beatty to Jane Fonda and beyond, including directors, writers, producers, editors, designers of sets and costumes.
As such, the authenticity of the text is irrefutable.
The material in the book – gathered over the decades by the American Film Institute – has never been published before, has never been heard before.

It is comprehensive – a monument that will never age nor be surpassed.

    • Isabelle Huppert: Stardom, Performance, Authorship

Featuring a lineup of distinguished academics, this collection remedies the absence of scholarly attention to French cinematic legend Isabelle Huppert. This volume deconstructs Huppert’s star persona and public profile through critical and theoretical analysis of her various screen roles-from her very early appearances alongside Romy Schneider in César et Rosalie (Sautet, 1972) and Gérard Depardieu in Les Valseuses (1974) to a number of celebrated collaborations with high-profile European auteurs such as Catherine Breillat, Claire Denis, Jean-Luc Godard, Michael Haneke and Joseph Losey, and with more popular auteurs such as Claude Chabrol and François Ozon.

Known for a cerebral internalization of characterization, a technical mastery of extreme emotions, and a singular brand of icy intellectualism, Huppert’s performances continue to impress, stun and surprise audiences. By focusing on several theoretical questions that relate to image, identity, sexuality and place, this volume situates Huppert’s star persona in the more practical creative contexts of performance, authorship, genre and collaboration. This volume contrasts complementary critical accounts of her stardom by working across the different periods and territories of her career.

      08
Using a unique mix of neuroscience, cultural history and advertising research, the study shows how an increase in abstract, left-brain thinking has spread across business and popular culture and how this is undermining creativity and making advertising less effective. Crucially, it also provides practical advice to reverse this decline. According to the 130-page publication, the reasons underlying the crisis relate to the way the brain attends to the world: the same instincts that lie behind short-termism and narrow focus are resulting in work that is flat, abstract, dislocated and devitalised – advertising that doesn’t move people. An attentional shift has occurred in business and society; a change in thinking style that has left its mark not just on advertising, but also on popular culture.

    • Memorable Supporting Actors and Actresses from the 1930s to 1950s: Book 1 – A Through I

      03
My previous books on Forgotten Movie Stars of the 1930s through 1950s have focused on the leading men and women of that era. While those individuals are pretty much the movie stars that we remember, their films would have gone nowhere without the contributions of supporting actors and actresses who made their movies great. After all, what would Casablanca have been without Claude Rains? The Manchurian Candidate without Angela Lansbury? The leading ladies and leading men could get by with their good looks, charisma, and not always great acting ability. On the other hand, supporting actors and actresses HAD to know how to act. And so, this book is a tribute to some of the greatest supporting actors of the classic film era in Hollywood from the 1930s through 1950s. Again, as in all my books, the people selected are based on my personal preferences. There are some people who probably should be in the book – Beulah Bondi comes to mine – but I just have not seen enough of her films to include her. You, the reader, may agree with some and disagree with others. That is your prerogative. I also never make a claim to have seen every film or actors from that era, but these are just the folks that have appealed to me. For each of these individuals, I have included some biographical information, including how they got their start in films: my favorite films of each individual; and other interesting notes about the person.

    • Merchant of Dreams: Louis B.Mayer, M.G.M. and the Secret Hollywood

      03
Louis B. Mayer, at the helm of the great film studio MGM, was the guardian of American ideals. He was the most patriotic and romantic of the film makers, creating a dream world for the public in his lavish and luxurious movies. The son of a penniless Russian immigrant, Louis B. Mayer became the most powerful and richest film tycoon in Hollywood. His was the imagination which launched a galaxy of stars, among them Katherine Hepburn, Spencer Tracy, Judy Garland, Greta Garbo, Joan Crawford, Vivien Leigh, Gene Kelly, Clark Gable and Jean Harlow. This biography is as much an account of their triumphs and tragedies as lt is of the brooding presence of Mayer.

    • Methods of the Madmen: How the advertising men and women of Britain’s most awarded agency did their most awarded ads

      08

Happiness is a cigar called Hamlet. Hovis, as good for you today as it’s always been. Heineken refreshes the parts other beers cannot reach. These are three of the most famous advertising campaigns ever produced, and all the work of Collett, Dickenson, Pearce & Partners.

There was something in the air at CDP that made it special. Some compared it with being in the Beatles. Others said it was like playing for a football club at the top of the Premier League. Certainly, CDP possessed an ethos driven by an unshakeable belief in creativity: the new, the brilliant, the witty and the vital. It was relentless in its search for ideas that not only contributed to the success of its clients, but also to the happiness of the nation. CDP commercials became as much a part of the fabric of British popular culture as Fawlty Towers, The Two Ronnies and Eric and Ernie.

In 2012, at an evening to mark the 50th anniversary of Design & Art Direction, CDP won yet another award – for being the ‘most awarded agency’ of the last 50 years.

This book tells the story of the ads that won these awards: how they were conceived and the men and women who dreamed them up. Whether you are a student of advertising, work in the business, or are simply a member of the public who remembers these ads with fondness, this book will entertain you.
