BoJack Horseman: The Art Before the Horse
Netflix’s BoJack Horseman has quickly become one of the most critically acclaimed animated comedy series in recent memory. Set in an off-kilter, cynically spun rendering of modern-day Hollywood, the show follows washed-up horse actor BoJack Horseman (voiced by Will Arnett) as he attempts to turn his life around. BoJack Horseman: The Art Before the Horse is the official behind-the-scenes companion to this cult-hit series. Part oral history sourced from original interviews with the show’s cast and crew, part art book—including sketches, storyboards, and background art—this book will trace the series from conception to post-production. Beginning with the initial development of creator/ showrunner Raphael Bob-Waksberg and production designer Lisa Hanawalt’s inimitable aesthetic vision, The Art Before the Horse goes on to reveal all of the moving parts—direction, writing, casting, animation, and music—that come together to form this uniquely bleak, emotionally potent, very funny show. Also Available: BoJack Horseman 2019 Wall Calendar (ISBN: 978-1-4197-3177-8)

The Whole Equation: A History of Hollywood
A book that sees Hollywood as an idea, a trick, a religion even that swept the world, a book that knows what the bosses did, and why and how, but which also feels the impact on the mass audiences in the dark auditoriums. There isn’t a book that explains – even at a basic level – how the business, the money, of pictures operates. THE WHOLE EQUATION takes the history and describes the grand panorama so that the reader knows how he or she fitted in, along with Bogart, the Marx Brothers and Daryl Zanuck. The business is the neglected aspect of the story, neglected because its truths threaten the alleged magic, the romance of the movies. Yet, the money is the true sexual secret of Hollywood, and David Thomson leaves the reader quite clear, that amid all the hype and pretension, we should always ‘follow the money’.Read more

Real-Time Video Content for Virtual Production & Live Entertainment: A Learning Roadmap for an Evolving Practice
Real-Time Video Content for Virtual Production & Live Entertainment looks at the evolution of current software and hardware, how these tools are used, and how to plan for productions dependent on real-time content.
From rock concerts to theatre, live television broadcast to film production, art installations to immersive experiences, the book outlines the various applications of real-time video content – the intersection of gaming and performance that is revolutionizing how films are made and how video content is created for screens. Rather than render out a fixed video file, new tools allow for interactive video content that responds to audience activity, camera position, and performer action in real time. Combining software renderers with environmental information, video content is generated nearly instantaneously to simulate depth, creating a new world of Virtual Production. This book provides an overview of the current software and hardware used to create real-time content while also reviewing the various external technologies the real-time content is dependent upon. Case studies from industry experts appear in each chapter to reinforce the tools described, establish industry practice, and provide insight on a complex and rapidly growing discipline.
Real-Time Video Content for Virtual Production & Live Entertainment prepares students and practitioners for a future working with real-time technologies and informs current entertainment technology professionals how to rethink about their old roles using these new tools.
The book includes access to a companion website featuring web-based and video resources that expand on topics covered in the text. Each chapter has a unique page that points to example material, video presentations, and professional studies on chapter topics. You can visit the companion website at rtv-book.com.

The Writer’s Map: An Atlas of Imaginary Lands
The Writer’s Map winner of Trade Illustrated category in the British Design and Production AwardsPhotography & Illustrated Travel Book of the Year at the Edward Stanford Travel Writing Awards 2019
Maps can transport us, they are filled with wonder, the possibility of real adventure and travels of the mind. This is an atlas of the journeys that writers make, encompassing not only the maps that actually appear in their books, but also the many maps that have inspired them and the sketches that they use in writing. For some, making a map is absolutely central to the craft of shaping and telling their tale. A writer’s map might mean also the geographies they describe, the worlds inside books that rise from the page, mapped or unmapped, and the realms that authors inhabit as they write. Philip Pullman recounts a map he drew for an early novel; Robert Macfarlane reflects on his cartophilia, set off by Robert Louis Stevenson and his map of Treasure Island; Joanne Harris tells of her fascination with Norse maps of the universe; Reif Larsen writes about our dependence on GPS and the impulse to map our experience; Daniel Reeve describes drawing maps and charts for The Hobbit trilogy of films; Miraphora Mina recalls creating ‘The Marauder’s Map’ for the Harry Potter films; David Mitchell leads us to the Mappa Mundi by way of Cloud Atlas and his own sketch maps. And there’s much more besides.
Amidst a cornucopia of images, there are maps of the world as envisaged in medieval times, as well as maps of adventure, sci-fi and fantasy, maps from nursery stories, literary classics, collectible comics – a vast range of genres.

Shocking Cinema of the 70s
This collection focuses on 1970s films from a variety of countries, and from the marginal to the mainstream, which, by tackling various ‘difficult’ subjects, have proved to be controversial in one way or another. It is not an uncritical celebration of the shocking and the subversive but an attempt to understand why this decade produced films which many found shocking, and what it was that made them shocking to certain audiences. To this end it includes not only films that shocked the conventionally minded, such as hard core pornography, but also those that outraged liberal opinion – for example, Death Wish and Dirty Harry. The book does not simply cast a critical light on a series of controversial films which have been variously maligned, misinterpreted or just plain ignored, but also assesses how their production values, narrative features and critical receptions can be linked to the wider historical and social forces that were dominant during this decade. Furthermore, it explores how these films resonate in our own historical moment – replete as it is with shocks of all kinds.Read more

A Mirror for England: British Movies from Austerity to Affluence (BFI Silver)
Raymond Durgnat’s classic study of British films from the 1940s to the 1960s, first published in 1970, remains one of the most important books ever written on British cinema. In his introduction, Kevin Gough-Yates writes: ‘Even now, it astounds by its courage and its audacity; if you think you have an ‘original’ approach to a filmor a director’s work and check it against A Mirror for England, you generally discover that Raymond Durgnat had said it already.’ Durgnat himself said about the book that ‘the main point was arranging a kind of rendezvous between thinking about movies and thinking, not so much about sociology, as about the experiences that people are having all the time.’ Durgnat used Mirror to assert the validity of British cinema against its dismissal by the critics of Cahiers du cinéma and Sight and Sound. His analysis takes in classics such as In Which We Serve (1942), A Matter of Life and Death (1946) and The Blue Lamp (1949), alongside ‘B’ films and popular genres such as Hammer horror. Durgnat makes a cogent and compelling case for the success of British films in reflecting British predicaments, moods and myths, at the same time as providing some disturbing new insights into a national character by whose enigmas and contradictions we continue to be perplexed and fascinated.Read more

Isabelle Huppert: Stardom, Performance, Authorship
Featuring a lineup of distinguished academics, this collection remedies the absence of scholarly attention to French cinematic legend Isabelle Huppert. This volume deconstructs Huppert’s star persona and public profile through critical and theoretical analysis of her various screen roles-from her very early appearances alongside Romy Schneider in César et Rosalie (Sautet, 1972) and Gérard Depardieu in Les Valseuses (1974) to a number of celebrated collaborations with high-profile European auteurs such as Catherine Breillat, Claire Denis, Jean-Luc Godard, Michael Haneke and Joseph Losey, and with more popular auteurs such as Claude Chabrol and François Ozon.Known for a cerebral internalization of characterization, a technical mastery of extreme emotions, and a singular brand of icy intellectualism, Huppert’s performances continue to impress, stun and surprise audiences. By focusing on several theoretical questions that relate to image, identity, sexuality and place, this volume situates Huppert’s star persona in the more practical creative contexts of performance, authorship, genre and collaboration. This volume contrasts complementary critical accounts of her stardom by working across the different periods and territories of her career.

Sixties British Cinema (The History of British Film)
British films of the 1960s are undervalued. Their search for realism has often been dismissed as drabness and their more frivolous efforts can now appear just empty-headed. Robert Murphy’s ‘Sixties British Cinema’ is the first study to challenge this view. He shows that the realist tradition of the late ’50s and early ’60s was anything but dreary and depressing, and gave birth to a clutch of films remarkable for their confidence and vitality: ‘Saturday Night and Sunday Morning, A Kind of Loving,’ and ‘A Taste of Honey’ are only the better known titles. ‘Sixties British Cinema ‘revalues key genres of the period – horror, crime, and comedy – and takes a fresh look at the ‘swinging London’ films, finding disturbing undertones that reflect the cultural changes of the decade. Now that our cinematic past is constantly recycled on television, Murphy’s informative, engaging, and perceptive review of these films and their cultural and industrial context offers an invaluable guide to this neglected era of British cinema.Read more
