The Ukulele Songbook: Shanties & Songs of the Sea
Thomas Balinger
The Ukulele Songbook
Shanties & Songs of the SeaFar-away oceans, perilous storms, bold explorers, bloodthirsty pirates and treasures hidden on mysterious islands – but likewise the hopes and the fears of friends, lovers and families left back home on dry land – have made for fascinating and evocative stories since the day men caught a glimpse of the deep blue sea.
But there’s more to the ocean’s fascination than just stories and myths. It also spawned its very own kind of music: the Shanties – songs of the wind and the waves, of hard work on the seven seas, of romantic buccaneers and brutal skippers harrying their crews to the marrow. In this book you’ll find a collection of shanties known and loved all over the world, arranged for easy Ukulele in standard C tuning (G-C-E-A). Of course, there’s „classics“ like Banks of Sacramento, Blow the man down or What shall we do with the drunken sailor, but you’ll also encounter some songs not as common and maybe some you might never have heard before.
All songs in musical notation with chord symbols plus melody TAB – you don’t have to read music to start playing right away!
Whether you want to pick the melody, strum the chords or just need the complete lyrics: you’ll find everything you need on these pages. And if you don’t know how to play a particular chord, don’t worry: each song features easy-to-read chord diagrams, too.
For reference, there’s a handy appendix listing all the chords used in this book plus a selection of easy strumming patterns you can use to accompany songs.Songs

Sailor Song: The Shanties and Ballads of the High Seas
Raise the mainsail for a rollick through a shipload of shantiesFrom the earliest of voyages seafarers have sung, be they homeward bound or rolling in a merciless sea to an unknown horizon. The shouts and cries of these sailors’ shanties provided a musical rhythm to their work and such ‘concerted’ efforts improved efficiency as anchors were raised, sails hoisted, and bilge water pumped. Boredom was allayed, concentration increased, and the stamina-sapping agonies were borne on a melody.
In Sailor Song acclaimed writer, playwright and musician Gerry Smyth presents the words and music of some 40 ‘heaving or hauling’ working shanties and 10 off-duty sea songs and ballads. The meanings and history of each song is revealed alongside thematic sections exploring celebrated shantymen, song types and traditions as well as the influence these songs have had on the folk music movement, rock music and the modern shanty revival.
The volume is illustrated with specially commissioned artworks by popular folk artist Jonny Hannah alongside many previously unpublished artworks from the holdings of the British Library.

Trinity College London Sight Reading Piano: Grades 3-5
This progressive method provides a carefully paced approach to the sight reading requirements of Trinity grade exams at Grades 3 to 5. For each grade there are ten lessons, each with a clear area of focus. Stage-appropriate sight reading tips, both general and specific to the instrument, are given along the way.
Each lesson presents four or five preparatory exercises leading to a duet, included to encourage the development of ensemble sight reading skills. While duets are not required for grade exams, they are vital in building confidence and rhythmic fluency. Each duet builds on the same musical ideas as the preceding exercises, consolidating the learning and assisting the student through familiarity.
Official Trinity specimen sight reading tests from Trinity’s Sound at Sight Piano (original series) conclude each grade section. By the time the student has completed the ten lessons they should be well prepared to cope with the demands of these tests. Further specimen tests are available separately in Sound at Sight Piano (2nd series).
