David Netto
The first monograph of a distinctive voice in American design whose work, a blend of sophisticated finishes, textiles, antiques, and contemporary furniture, has won him a dedicated following from tastemakers.‘[David Netto] may be the most beautifully conceived, elegantly designed, and eloquently written monograph on interior design ever published.’ – Paul Goldberger
For more than a decade, David Netto has been profiling the leading lights of the design world in lively, illuminating articles for numerous publications. Now, at long last, he turns his erudite eye and rapier wit to his own work as an interior designer and architect. Featuring some 20 projects, from city apartments to country houses to seaside and mountain getaways, David Netto reveals an eclectic aesthetic that brings to modernism a touch of warmth and personality and to traditionalism a jolt of energy and a dash of the exotic. Extensively photographed and with delightful watercolor illustrations by interiors artist Mita Bland, the book is as enlightening to read as it is inspiring to look at.
‘In this first monograph, the celebrated designer and T&C contributor David Netto shares 20 of his projects―from the city to the seashore―along with illustrations by Mita Bland to showcase the warmth and wit that have become his calling card, both in houses and on the page. Until you can get the man himself inside your own abode, pouring over this must read just might be the next thing’. – Town & Country
‘This monograph by the New York-born and Los Angeles-based designer and writer David Netto is an interesting work. It is in the familiar structure of town/country/escape projects. But there, any similarity to what you might be used to seeing in a book about interior design ends. This is one to return to again and again. Why? First, the photographs leap off the page. They are dichotomous: both intimate and expansive as they set each scene. Secondly – and equally significantly – the narratives that accompany the projects soar’. – House & Garden
‘A Harvard architecture school dropout turned celebrated interior designer, David Netto has also earned a reputation as a sharp design writer and historian. Now, he turns his keen eye (and pen) toward his own work with a compilation of 20 projects ranging from sleek city abodes to spacious country homes’. – Cultured

Philip Guston: A Life Spent Painting
An authoritative and comprehensive survey of the life and work of the visionary and influential painter Philip Guston.Driven and consumed by art, Philip Guston painted and drew compulsively. This book takes the reader from his early social realist murals and easel paintings of the 1930s and 1940s, to the Abstract Expressionist works of the 1950s and early 1960s, and finally to the powerful new language of figurative painting, which he developed in the late 1960s and 1970s. Drawing on more than thirty years of his own research, the critic and curator, Robert Storr, maps Guston’s entire career in one definitive volume, providing a substantial, accessible and revealing analysis of his work.
With more than 850 images, the book illustrates Guston’s key works and includes many unpublished paintings and drawings. An extensive chronology, illustrated with photographs, letters, articles, publications and other ephemera drawn from the artist’s archives and other sources, contextualizes Guston’s life and provides in-depth coverage of his life at home, his work in the studio, his relationship with fellow artists and his many exhibitions.
Guston was able to speak about art with unrivalled passion and fluency. In celebration of this, the book features Guston’s own thoughts on his drawings and his great heroes of the Italian Renaissance.

Abstract Art: A Global History
Taking a radically new approach to the history of abstract painting, Pepe Karmel applies a scholarly yet fresh vision to reconsider the history of abstraction from a global perspective and to demonstrate that abstraction is embedded in the real world. Moving beyond the orthodox canonical terrain of abstract art, he surveys artists from across the globe, examining their work from the point of view of content rather than form. Previous writers have approached the history of abstraction as a series of movements solving a series of formal problems. In contrast, Karmel focuses on the subject matter of abstract art, showing how artists have used abstract imagery to express social, cultural and spiritual experience. An introductory discussion of the work of the early modern pioneers of abstraction opens up into a completely new approach to abstract art based around five inclusive themes – the body, the landscape, the cosmos, architecture, and the repertory of man-made signs and patterns – each of which has its own chapter. Starting from a figurative example, Karmel works outwards to develop a series of narratives that go far beyond the established figures and movements traditionally associated with abstract art. Each narrative is complemented by a number of ‘featured’ abstract works, which provide an in-depth illustration of the breadth of Karmel’s distinctive vision.
A wide-ranging examination of topics – from embryos to the surface of skin, from vortexes to waves, planets to star charts, towers to windows – is interwoven with detailed analysis of works by established figures like Joan Miró and Jackson Pollock alongside pieces by lesser-known artists such as Wu Guanzhong, Hilma af Klint and Odili Donald Odita.

Lemon. How the advertising brain turned sour.
Using a unique mix of neuroscience, cultural history and advertising research, the study shows how an increase in abstract, left-brain thinking has spread across business and popular culture and how this is undermining creativity and making advertising less effective. Crucially, it also provides practical advice to reverse this decline. According to the 130-page publication, the reasons underlying the crisis relate to the way the brain attends to the world: the same instincts that lie behind short-termism and narrow focus are resulting in work that is flat, abstract, dislocated and devitalised – advertising that doesn’t move people. An attentional shift has occurred in business and society; a change in thinking style that has left its mark not just on advertising, but also on popular culture.Read more

Working with Actors: Meisner Technique for Directors and Actors
Working with Actors provides the key to unlocking the honest, dynamic performance every actor has within them. It offers a well-articulated formulation of the Meisner Technique easy for directors and actors to use within a working context. Through setting out an accessible training programme for practitioners working across stage and screen, this book establishes a clear-cut route to building a three-dimensional character in an organic, non-intellectual fashion, based squarely on the character’s objectives. Few books in this field venture out of the training studio, while in this book – alongside offering an intense and concentrated Meisner training programme – the focus is more on the ‘pay-off’: the collaborative act of developing the role and how that plays out in rehearsal and performance. Beyond that, the books uniquely offers: > a new modality for script reading, analysis and rehearsal through which the character is born in relation to other characters; > a prioritisation of the key skills for coming alive in the moment – listening and putting one’s attention wholly on the other character/actor; > a historical perspective on how Meisner’s methods have evolved and why they provide the basis of truthful acting; > for directors, a format for analysis of the complete work based on Stanislavskian principles; > for actors, complementary methods, such as Uta Hagen’s ‘endowment’, to enhance the ‘reality of doing’Read more

Pierre Chareau: Modern Architecture and Design
Now back in print, a revealing look at the visionary French furniture designer and architect, highlighting his virtuoso designs and versatile creativity
“Pierre Chareau: Modern Architecture and Design adds even more depth and breadth to the architect’s deserved reputation for creative virtuosity.”―Julie V. Iovine, Wall Street Journal
“[A]n exceptionally informative, readable catalog.”―Roberta Smith, New York Times
The designer and architect Pierre Chareau (1883–1950) was a pivotal figure in modernism. His extraordinary Art Deco furniture is avidly collected and his visionary glass house, the Maison de Verre, is celebrated, but the breadth of his design genius has been little explored. Chareau linked architecture, fine arts, and style; designed furniture for avant-garde films and chic homes; collected artists such as Picasso and Mondrian; and was a radical innovator in the use of materials. This revealing look at the visionary French designer highlights his virtuosity and versatile creativity. Essays by leading scholars embrace the full scope of his invention, offering detailed analyses of individual projects, the interdisciplinary nature of his work, his Jewish background, his place in the avant-garde of Paris between the wars, and his more recent reception. Extensive illustrations present a rich sampling of Chareau’s furniture, architecture, interiors, fabrics, and wallpapers, as well as his own important art collection.

The Illustrated Journey: Sixty Years Through Space and Time
‘It all started out as a mild curiosity in a junk-yard, and now it’s turned out to be quite a great spirit of adventure don’t you think?’ … so spoke the Doctor during Doctor Who‘s first season, and from that ‘mild curiosity’ the show has gone on to explore strange new worlds in this universe and others, taking in all times and places along the way.
For Doctor Who‘s sixtieth anniversary, we considered that perhaps the best way to celebrate would be to remind ourselves of all the adventure, thrills, alien species, monsters, villains, companions and excitement that the Doctor has experienced on his many travels, all with his most faithful of companions, the TARDIS, by his side. Sometimes ‘the old girl’ gets left behind, or sidestepped in time, but most often she is there at the start, and again at the end, waiting patiently for the Doctor and his friends to return in order to whisk them all off somewhere else, where more adventure awaits.
And what better guide than the incredible artwork of Daryl Joyce. Joyce has been at the forefront of Doctor Who artwork for many years, creating imagery to accompany many tie-in works, but this is the first time that a work of this magnitude has been attempted … trying to encapsulate most of the Doctors adventures and voyages in one book. We did consider trying to cover them all, but the book would have ended up twice the size – unmanageable – so with Daryl’s help we have filtered and filletted the journeys and present the majority … with a few additional sidesteps and images along the way, all to celebrate sixty amazing years of travel in time and space …
‘From the misty streets of Shoreditch in 1963, to dark and spooky planets via ancient Rome, Troy and literally hundreds of locations in between,’ explained Joyce. ‘The aim was to respectfully up the scale, bring the imagination to life and give it all the gothic polish that Robert Holmes inspired in my appreciation of Doctor Who.’
Join us for an adventure through memory, to scenes and places explored and encountered by the Doctor and his friends …
And here’s to many more years to come!
PLEASE NOTE: THIS BOOK IS BOUND ON THE LONG EDGE, BUT IT’S INTENDED TO BE VIEWED WITH THE BOUND EDGE AT THE TOP!
WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING (REVIEWS OF THE HARDBACK EDITION):
‘The Illustrated Journey offers art that inspires and intrigues, as you always hope art will, when bringing a favourite show or subject to life. I can see fans returning to savour this collection again and again, spotting some new aspect of Daryl’s work each time.’ John Freeman, Down the Tubes
‘If you are a fan of Doctor Who, or just fantasy artwork in general, then The Illustrated Journey by Daryl Joyce is an absolute must. The breadth of artistic imagination and technical skill displayed across its 336 pages is simply breathtaking.’ Mike Tucker
‘I finished reading this book last night (if “reading” is the right word for an art book), and wanted to say how magnificent it is. The artwork is gorgeous – the composition, light and colour are simply beautiful. The book plays to Joyce’s strengths as an artist, and the way he encapsulates the essence of each story into his paintings is an absolute joy. Highly recommended.’ JAMES C MCFETRIDGE
‘Wanted to add my words of appreciation about this amazing book. I did hesitate to purchase it at first because of the price and thought twice about it once I had it in the shopping cart on the Telos site, but I’m so glad I bought it. It’s beautiful and must be one of my favourite Who books. The mind boggles at the amount of work Daryl Joyce must have put into it, there are hundreds of pieces of gorgeous art. It reminds me of those Sci-Fi art books I used to get at Christmas about space travel and aliens that were full of paperback cover art. I loved those books and I love this.’ GAVIN23

Women of Abstract Expressionism (The Oxford Research Centre in the Humanities/Princeton University Press Lec)
The celebrated survey of female Abstract Expressionist artists revealing the richness and lasting influence of their workThe artists Jay DeFeo, Helen Frankenthaler, Grace Hartigan, Elaine de Kooning, Lee Krasner, Joan Mitchell, and many other women played major roles in the development of Abstract Expressionism, which flourished in New York and San Francisco in the 1940s and 1950s and has been recognized as the first fully American modern art movement. Though the contributions of these women were central to American art of the twentieth century, their work has not received the same critical attention as that of their male counterparts.
Women of Abstract Expressionism is a long-overdue survey. Lavishly illustrated with full-color plates emphasizing the expressive freedom of direct gesture and process at the core of the movement, this book features biographies of more than forty artists, offering insight into their lives and work. Essays by noted scholars explore the techniques, concerns, and legacies of women in Abstract Expressionism, shedding light on their unique experiences. Virgil Abloh. Nike. ICONS
In 2016, sportswear manufacturer Nike and fashion designer Virgil Abloh joined forces to create a sneaker collection celebrating 10 of the Oregon-based company’s most iconic shoes. With their project The Ten―which reimagined icons like Air Jordan 1, Air Max 90, Air Force 1, and Air Presto, among others―they reinvigorated sneaker culture.
Virgil Abloh’s designs offer deep insights into engineering ingenuity and burst with cultural cachet. Drawing on the genius of the original shoe using lettering, ironic labels, collage, and sculpting techniques, Abloh played with language and sculptural elements to construct new meaning. Inspired by the wit of Dadaism, architectural theory, and avant-garde happenings, he analyzed what makes each shoe iconic and deconstructed it into an artistic assemblage, making each shoe into a piece of industrial design, a readymade sculpture, and a wearable all at once.
ICONS traces Abloh’s investigative, creative process through documentation of the prototypes, original text messages from Abloh to Nike designers, and treasures from the Nike archives. We find Swooshes sliced away from Air Jordans and reapplied with tape or thread, Abloh’s typical text fragments in quotation marks on Air Force 1, and All Stars cut into pieces. We take a look behind the scenes and witness Abloh’s DIY approach, which gave each model in the Off-WhiteTM c/o Nike collection its own unique touch. His deconstructive vocabulary is reflected in the Swiss binding, which showcases an open spine and discloses the production of the book.
The book documents Abloh’s cooperative way of working and reaffirms the power of print. For its design Nike and Abloh partnered with the acclaimed London-based design studio Zak Group. Together they conceived a two-part compendium, equal parts catalog and conceptual toolbox. The first part of the book presents a visual culture of sneakers while a lexicon in the second part defines the key people, places, objects, ideas, materials, and scenes from which the project grew. Texts by Nike’s Nicholas Schonberger, writer Troy Patterson, curator and historian Glenn Adamson, and Virgil Abloh himself frame the collaborative work within fashion and design history. A foreword by Hiroshi Fujiwara places the project within the historical continuum of Nike collaborators.

Consequently it is a book that will interest artists, art students, art historians, and lovers and collectors of drawings. It also introduces us to the work and life of a hitherto neglected master: Charles Bargue.
The Drawing Course consists of three sections. The first consists of plates drawn after casts, usually of antique examples. Different parts of the body are studied in order of difficulty, until full figures are presented. The second section pays homage to the western school of painting, with lithographs after exemplary drawings by Renaissance and modern masters. The third part contains almost 60 académies, or drawings after nude male models, all original inventions by Bargue, the lithographer. With great care, the student is introduced to continually more difficult problems in the close observing and recording of nature.
Charles Bargue started his career as a lithographer of drawings by hack artists for a popular market in comic, sentimental and soft-porn subjects. By working with Gérôme, and in preparing the plates for the course, Bargue was transformed into a spectacular painter of single figures and intimate scenes; a master of precious details that always remain observation and never became self-conscious virtuosity, and colour schemes that unified his composition in exquisite tonal harmonies. The last part of the book is a biography of Bargue, along with a preliminary catalogue of his paintings, accompanied by reproductions of all that have been found and of many of those lost.

Slim Aarons: Style
Glamorous fashions, personalities, and places captured by iconic photographer Slim Aarons
Slim Aarons, at least according to the man himself, did not photograph fashion: “I didn’t do fashion. I did the people in their clothes that became the fashion.” But despite what he claimed, Aarons’s work is indelibly tied to fashion. Aarons’s incredibly influential photographs of high society and socialites being unambiguously themselves are still a source of inspiration for modern day style icons.
Slim Aarons: Style showcases the photographs that both recorded and influenced the luminaries of the fashion world. This volume features early black-and-white fashion photography, as well as portraits of the fashionable elite―like Jacqueline de Ribes, C.Z. Guest, Nan Kempner, and Marisa Berenson―and those that designed the clothes, such as Oscar de la Renta, Emilio Pucci, Mary McFadden, and Lilly Pulitzer. Featuring some never-before-seen images and detailed captions written by fashion historians, Slim Aarons: Style is a collection of the photographer’s most stylish work.

Avedon Advertising
The first survey of Richard Avedon’s influential advertising work
Richard Avedon was one of the most sought-after and influential advertising photographers in America from the 1940s to the beginning of the 21st century, creating work that exemplified Madison Avenue at the height of its influence in world culture. Working with a talented cadre of models, copy writers, and art directors, Avedon made images that enticed consumers to embrace the new, especially in the areas of fashion and beauty, with campaigns for Revlon, Chanel, Calvin Klein, Dior, and Versace, among many others. Avedon Advertising tells this story, reproducing memorable ads that range from the buoyant 1940s and 1950s, when post-war prosperity opened up new experiences to consumers; through the explosive ’60s; and into the era defined by celebrity culture and global brand awareness.

Tree and Serpent: Early Buddhist Art in India
With new photography of extraordinarily rare works of art, this pioneering study features discoveries and research essential to understanding the origins and meaning of Buddhist artistic traditionsNamed for two primary motifs in Buddhist art, the sacred bodhi tree and the protective snake, Tree & Serpent: Early Buddhist Art in India is the first publication to foreground devotional works produced in the Deccan from 200 BCE to 400 CE. Unlike traditional narratives, which focus on northern India (where the Buddha was born, taught, and died), this groundbreaking book presents Buddhist art from monastic sites in the south. Long neglected, this is among the earliest corpus of Buddhist art surviving, and among the most sublimely beautiful. An international team of researchers contributes new scholarship on the sculptural and devotional art associated with Buddhism, and masterpieces from recently excavated Buddhist sites are published here for the first time―including Kanaganahalli and Phanigiri, the most important new discoveries in a generation. With its exploration of Buddhism’s emergence in southern India, as well as of India’s deep commercial and cultural engagement with the Hellenized and Roman worlds, the definitive study expands our understanding of the origins of Buddhist art itself.

The Illusion of Life: Disney Animation (Disney Editions Deluxe)
The most complete book on the subject ever written, this is the fascinating inside story by two long-term Disney animators of the gradual perfecting of a relatively young and particularly American art from, which no other move studio has ever been able to equal.
The authors, Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston, worked with Walt Disney himself as well as other leading figures in a half-century of Disney films. They personally animated leading characters in most of the famous films and have decades of close association with the others who helped perfect this extremely difficult and time-consuming art form. Not to be mistaken for just a “how-to-do-it,” this voluminously illustrated volume (like the classic Disney films themselves) is intended for everyone to enjoy.
Besides relating the painstaking trial-and-error development of Disney’s character animation technology, this book irresistibly charms us with almost an overabundance of the original historic drawings used in creating some of the best-loved characters in American culture: Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck, Snow White and Bambi (among many, many others) as well as early sketches used in developing memorable sequences from classic features such as Fantasia and Pinocchio.
With the full cooperation of Walt Disney Productions and free access to the studio’s priceless archives, the authors took unparalleled advantage of their intimate long-term experience with animated films to choose the precise drawings to illustrate their points from among hundreds of thousands of pieces of artwork carefully stored away.
The book answers everybody’s question about how the amazingly lifelike effects of Disney character animation were achieved, including charming stories of the ways that many favorite animated figures got their unique personalities. From the perspective of two men who had an important role in shaping the art of animation, and within the context of the history of animation and the growth of the Disney studio, this is the definitive volume on the work and achievement of one of America’s best-known and most widely loved cultural institutions. Nostalgia and film buffs, students of popular culture, and that very broad audience who warmly responds to the Disney “illusion of life” will find this book compelling reading (and looking!).
