  • Destination Art: Art Essentials: 0

Manifesting in a broad range of media, from massive land and environmental works and extensive sculpture parks to giant public murals, ‘destination art’ demands to be found and met in its own space and on its own terms. Some works require a committed pilgrimage to find – in deserts, forests, and quarries, on farmland and in mountains, in ghost towns and nature reserves. Others might be hidden gems in urban environments. What unites them in every instance is an artistic symbiosis between the installation and its setting.

Through the eyes of renowned art historian Amy Dempsey, the magic of public art comes alive – and while the art is undoubtedly important, the journey there is often equally so. Perfect both for armchair adventurers and keen globetrotters, Destination Art offers a clear way in to a vast subject. From the vibrant Rainbow Village in Taiwan and the Rock Garden of Chandigarh, to Antony Gormley’s Inside Australia at Lake Ballard, Dempsey expertly guides readers through the most exciting and significant destination artworks in the world. Each featured installation is accompanied by a short essay, stunning photographs and useful information on key works and where to find them.

    08

A Sunday Times Best Book of the Year 2017

One day in November 1994, Lawrence Levy received a phone call out of the blue from Steve Jobs, whom he’d never met, offering him a job running Pixar, a little-known company that had already lost Jobs $50 million. With Pixar’s prospects looking bleak, it was with some trepidation that Levy accepted the position. After a few weeks he discovered that the situation was even worse than he’d imagined.

Pixar’s advertising division just about broke even, its graphics software had few customers, its short films didn’t make any money and, on top of all that, Jobs was pushing to take the company public. Everything was riding on the studio’s first feature film, codenamed Toy Story, and even then it would have to be one of the most successful animated features of all time…

Full of wisdom on bringing business and creativity together, and recounting the touching story of Levy’s enduring friendship with Jobs, To Pixar and Beyond is a fascinating insider’s account of one of Hollywood’s greatest success stories.

  • The British Working Class in Postwar Film

    01
An incidental pleasure of watching a film is what it tells us about the society in which it is made. Using a sociological model, The British working class in postwar film looks at how working-class people are portrayed in British feature films from the decade after the Second World War. Though some of the films examined are well known, others have been forgotten and deserve reassessment. Original statistical data is used to assess the popularity of the films with audiences. With an interdisciplinary approach and the avoidance of jargon, this book seeks to broaden the approach to film studies. Students of media and cultural studies are introduced to the skills of other disciplines, while sociologists and historians are encouraged to consider the value of film evidence in their own fields. The work should appeal to all readers interested in social history and in how cinema and society interact. 1. Exploring a lost culture 2. Who were the workers? 3. • Foreign Devils on the Silk Road: The Search for the Lost Treasures of Central Asia

    05
The Silk Road, which linked imperial Rome and distant China, was once the greatest thoroughfare on earth. Along it travelled precious cargoes of silk, gold and ivory, as well as revolutionary new ideas. Its oasis towns blossomed into thriving centres of Buddhist art and learning. In time it began to decline. The traffic slowed, the merchants left and finally its towns vanished beneath the desert sands to be forgotten for a thousand years. But legends grew up of lost cities filled with treasures and guarded by demons. In the early years of the last century foreign explorers began to investigate these legends, and very soon an international race began for the art treasures of the Silk Road. Huge wall paintings, sculptures and priceless manuscripts were carried away, literally by the ton, and are today scattered through the museums of a dozen countries. Peter Hopkirk tells the story of the intrepid men who, at great personal risk, led these long-range archaeological raids, incurring the undying wrath of the Chinese.

  • Exit Stage Left: The curious afterlife of pop stars

    08

**A SUNDAY TIMES, GUARDIAN & TELEGRAPH MUSIC BOOK OF THE YEAR 2022**

    **INDEPENDENT BOOK OF THE MONTH**

    **GUARDIAN BOOK OF THE DAY**

**FINANCIAL TIMES ‘BEST SUMMER BOOKS 2022’ PICK**

    ‘Incredibly moving.’ – Guardian

    ‘Entertaining.’ – Telegraph

‘Most books about pop stars focus on the way we turn average human beings into demi-gods. In writing a book about how they have to turn back into humans Nick Duerden has done both us and them a service.’ – David Hepworth

‘Funny, poignant and often inspirational.’ – Mat Osman

The desire for adulation is a light that never goes out. We live in a culture obsessed by the notion of fame – the heedless pursuit of it; the almost obligatory subsequent fallout. But what’s it like to actually achieve it, and what happens when fame abruptly passes, and shifts, as it does, onto someone else?

This is the point at which pop stars are at their most heroic, because they don’t give up. They keep on striving, keep making music, and refuse simply to ebb away. Some sustain themselves on the nostalgia circuit, others continue to beaver away in the studio, no longer Abbey Road, perhaps, so much as the garden shed. But all of them, in their own individual ways, still dare to dream.

Exit Stage Left features tales of drug addiction, bankruptcy, depression and divorce, but also of optimism, a genuine love of the craft, humility and hope. This is a candid, laugh-out-loud and occasionally shocking look at what happens when the brightest stars fall back down to earth.

‘Exit Stage Left is the book I’ve long wanted to read about the PTSD-like after-effects of pop stardom – and Nick Duerden is the perfect writer for the job. The pop star’s bittersweet lot is represented with flair and empathy.’ – Pete Paphides, author of Broken Greek

‘Exit Stage Left is a funny and poignant book, drawing on Duerden’s considerable experience as a journalist and interviewer . . . he understands what motivates this strange bunch of people.’ – Andy Miller, Spectator

‘Fame is the brightest candle, but in this brilliant collection of interviews, Nick Duerden answers the question: what does a candle do after it’s burned out?’ – David Quantick

‘Duerden finds fascinating layers of humanity, pathos, humour and wisdom in equal measure. A brilliant book, for artists and fans alike.’ – Frank Turner

Featuring brand new interviews with the likes of: Bob Geldof, Shaun Ryder, Robbie Williams, Roisin Murphy, Stewart Copeland, Billy Bragg, Wendy James, Alex Kapranos, Joan Armatrading, Leo Sayer, Gary Lightbody, Lisa Maffia, Tim Booth, Bill Drummond, Rufus Wainwright, David Gray, and Justin Hawkins.

From the bohemian ways of her father’s social circle to the privileged glamour of her mother’s acting career, Miki’s young life was a blur of travel, celebrities and peripatetic schooling. But frequent relocation, parental neglect and the dark presence of her abusive grandmother resulted in crippling shyness, mental-health issues and a vulnerability to exploitation.

The route out of this hole was music – a passion shared by schoolmate Emma Anderson. The teenagers began attending gigs together and would ultimately go on to form Lush. Talented and exuberant, the band became hot property, swiftly transitioning from shoegaze icons to Britpop darlings.

Re-living the tours, recording sessions and music-industry madness they experienced along the way, this uncompromising memoir documents Lush’s thrilling rise and untimely fall. Yet at the heart of the book are Miki’s own battles: the conflict between her mouthy public persona and her thin-skinned private identity; the trials of being a woman in an infuriatingly male world; the struggle to find a middle ground between ‘safe’ indie obscurity and ‘sell-out’ international success. Miki also explores her complicated relationship with Emma – one that has fluctuated between camaraderie and rivalry over the years – and addresses the devastating tragedy that led to the band’s split.

Told through frank confession, wry humour and searing emotional honesty, this is the incredible tale of a trailblazing woman and a seminal band.

  • Global Tattoo Magazine by Duda Lozano (Global Tattoo Magazine “10th anniversary”)

Tattooing is a way of life! Yes, this phrase may sound cliché, but that’s not true. For millennia human beings have used their skin to permanently shape messages: The cavemen with their war marks, members of the tribes representing their status within the group, and elders asking the gods for protection. In modern times these reasons have been left aside to mean something purer: individual expression. People who wear tattoos in these times do so with the firm intention of visually showing what they carry inside, or of being the canvas of incredible artistic pieces. That’s why tattoos can’t be considered a fashion anymore, but a way of life. Global Tattoo Magazine is born precisely from this concept, to show the world the culture behind tattoos and what tattooed people all over the world want to represent. In Global Tattoo Magazine, you can find all the information you need about the most modern tattoo techniques, new styles, and current trends, so you can capture on your skin what you carry inside. Likewise, we will provide you with everything you need to know about the most acclaimed tattoo artists in the world, where you will be able to see part of their portfolio and find out what makes them so unique. Global Tattoo Magazine is designed to be the main reference for all those who want to get tattooed for the first time (or even for the fifteenth time), as there is a vacuum of information especially created and designed for the tribe of tattooed. This void can be noticed when many people, before getting a tattoo, look for information about techniques, style, care tips, and others, but almost all the information you get is focused on the tattoo artists, and, after all, it is the clients who will carry these pieces of art permanently engraved on their skin. A person with tattoos will always attract attention and steal glances, and we want to be part of that process, of guiding each tattooed in every step of getting the most incredible tattoo on their skin, after all, each one is much more than a simple canvas for the artist, he is a person who wants to show his individuality to the world. With the advice of Global Tattoo Magazine, these individuals can make the best realistic decisions about their next tattoos, to take with them an emblematic piece that truly represents them. Without a doubt, Global Tattoo Magazine seeks to be a source of real, current, and objective information about the world of tattooing, to be able to offer the advice and advice that readers really need, and even to be able to give them inspiration and motivation they need before getting their next tattoo. And we, at Tattooed!, will do our best so that you, who want to shout to the world who you really are with a piece that represents you, can take the step of tattooing your skin in the right way, giving you those tips you need so much, and answering those questions you may not dare to do. Don’t be afraid to stain your skin, after all, the only thing that matters is that you have the freedom to express your personality as you see fit, and, from now on, we will be with you every step of the way.

  • Art Nouveau Typographic Ornaments (Dover Pictorial Archive)

    01
The turn-of-the-century Arts and Crafts movement revitalized many art-craft domains, including of course typography. One sidelight to the typographic art, but one in which many printers specialized, was the typographical ornament — long a tradition among the very earliest printers, once again brought to the avant garde of design.
The best American and European printers offered whole catalogs of original ornament in the Art Nouveau manner — today they survive only in the archives of printers and historians of type. Here, from the archives of a contemporary typesetter and printing historian, is a selection of authentic Art Nouveau typographic ornament, culled out of late 19th and early 20th century specimen catalogs. Over 800 ornaments of all types include the patented Art Nouveau florals and flowing botanic wonders, both realistic and abstract. Women draped in pagan robes form borders and head and tailpieces. Animals abound: fish, elephants, turtles, birds, and creatures of myth and fancy. Innumerable spots, shapes, symbols, emblems, wreaths, scrolls, cherubs, and gargoyles show in clear black and white how they will look decorating menus, posters, handbills, ads, books, any functional or artistic project needing a flavor of Art Nouveau. Printers will be pleased to complement their Auriol, Baldur, Cordova, and Metropolitan, or other Art Nouveau–style typefaces with these unusual, long-forgotten ornaments. Mirror images given for many of the designs increase their utility. All images are from original sources, all copyright-free.

  • The Second Summer of Love: How Dance Music Took Over the World

    08
‘The definitive look at dance music and club culture – a must read’ – Paul Oakenfold

‘Brilliantly woven collection of aural histories … a damn fine read’ – DJ MAG

In 1987, four friends from London, Paul Oakenfold, Danny Rampling, Nicky Holloway and Johnny Walker, took a week-long holiday to Ibiza. What they saw there, and brought back home, would give rise to a new global music and counterculture movement.

As the eighties drew to their close, with Thatcherism holding the nation tight in its grip, something funny was happening right across the jungle of Britain’s nightlife scene. People were dressing down, not up, to go to clubs. And they were dancing right through the night armed seemingly with only bottles of water. Ecstasy and acid house music had arrived on British shores, and a tribal battle between for the moral future of the nation, between the youth and the establishment, had begun.

In The Second Summer of Love, author and dance music promoter Alon Shulman uses exclusive contributions from the world’s biggest DJs, including Paul Oakenfold, Carl Cox, Fatboy Slim, Moby, Faithless, Mr C, Farley & Heller, Danny Rampling and many others to faithfully recreate the story of the summers of 1988 and 1989, and chart the birth and rise of Acid House, dance music and club culture right through to the modern day where dance music has become a culturally dominant global industry.

Complete with stunning unseen photographs, this is the first authentic account of what really happened in that glorious period – from the politics and the people to the music, the drugs, the fashion and the culture – told by people who were there, as they bring to life the creation of an underground scene which inadvertently altered the course of modern global youth culture forever.

‘It’s as if house music and rave culture tapped into this ancient predilection of humans to stay up all night dancing and staring into the fire, and just supercharged it with electricity and MDMA’ – Moby

‘What I was experiencing was right in front of my eyes, it was happening right now and I loved it’ -Carl Cox

‘It opened my eyes and ears to a different spirit in music’ – Fatboy Slim
