History Of Morris Dancing: Tales Of A Band Of Brothers And The Ancient Morris Dancing Custom: The Morris Tradition
Morris dancing is a form of English folk dance usually accompanied by music. It is based on rhythmic stepping and the execution of choreographed figures by a group of dancers, usually wearing bell pads on their shins. Implements such as sticks, swords, and handkerchiefs may also be wielded by the dancers.
This book brought to you in these tales of an anarchic band of brothers who challenged the received wisdom and almost accidentally stumbled upon the essential core of this ancient custom. They brought it out of the museum and set it on fire. Treating it more like street theatre or flash mob, these iconoclasts sexed it up and breathed new life into it.
In your hands is a story of friendship, fun, and the bonds that unite people in a common cause. It is about comradeship, humor, trust, and mutual respect, and about how visions can be brought to life. It also happens to be set against a backdrop of folk culture and morris dancing.Read more

The Ecstasy of Being: Mythology and Dance (The Collected Works of Joseph Campbell)
Joseph Campbell’s collected writings on dance and art, edited and introduced by Nancy Allison, CMA, the founder of Jean Erdman Dance, and including Campbell’s unpublished manuscript “Mythology and Form in the Performing and Visual Arts,” the book he was working on when he died.Dance was one of mythologist Joseph Campbell’s wide-ranging passions. His wife, Jean Erdman, was a leading figure in modern dance who worked with Martha Graham and had Merce Cunningham in her first company. When Campbell retired from teaching in 1972, he and Erdman formed the Theater of the Open Eye, where for nearly fifteen years they presented a wide array of dance and theater productions, lectures, and performance pieces.
The Ecstasy of Being brings together seven of Campbell’s previously uncollected articles on dance, along with “Mythology and Form in the Performing and Visual Arts,” the treatise that he was working on when he died, published here for the first time.
In this new collection Campbell explores the rise of modern art and dance in the twentieth century; delves into the work and philosophy of Isadora Duncan, Martha Graham, and others; and, as always, probes the idea of art as “the funnel through which spirit is poured into life.” This book offers the reader an accessible, yet profound and provocative, insight into Campbell’s lifelong fascination with the relationship of myth to aesthetic form and human psychology.

Dancing on Eggshells: Kitchen, ballroom & the messy inbetween
‘We come for the glitter, but instead we get the grit, in stories told with insight, tenderness and joy.’ – Russell T Davies
With a foreword by Steph McGovern
‘I never thought I’d write a memoir. I never thought I’d do a lot of the things I have done in my thirty-four years, but life has a wonderful way of surprising us.’
Well-known as the winner of the third series of The Great British Bake Off and runner up of Strictly Come Dancing with his same-sex dance partner Johannes Radebe, John Whaite’s personal story is a complicated narrative of contradictions, highs and lows, told with tenderness, joy, insight and wit, but also unflinching honesty.
A shy little boy from rural Lancashire, who was sacred to sleep alone and danced a little ‘too gay’ at family weddings, he was also an unruly teen who shaved a checkerboard pattern into his hair and refused to conform.
From childhood his life has revolved around food – his parents owned a fish and chip shop where John worked in the back peeling potatoes – but for long periods he has been haunted by bulimia and body dysmorphia and not a day goes by when he doesn’t worry about what or how much he eats.
He achieved TV fame but then seemingly wilfully chose to self-destruct, before finding the strength to pull back when he woke up in a car with half a kebab at his feet and chilli sauce on his shoes.
Through it all, his essential optimism has meant that he has chosen to take every step back as a chance to reassess and begin again, finally arriving at the realisation that external validation and fulfilment is transient – a distraction from the sometimes painful pilgrimage we make as we gain wisdom from our experiences.

Love, Dance and Ecstasy
Dionysos is the Greek god of the grape-harvest and winemaking, of the growth and fertility of vegetation – especially orchards and vineyards – and, lastly, of insanity, ritual madness, religious ecstasy, festivity and theatre. Because of his links to plant growth, he also became associated with death, resurrection and regeneration. He was also known as Bákkhos to the Greeks, a name adopted by the Romans as Bacchus. The focus here is on the links between Dionysos’ cult and the perennial human preoccupations of drugs, sex and ecstasy.

The Royal Ballet: 75 Years
This book is a perceptive and critical account of the first 75 years of The Royal Ballet, tracing the company’s growth, and its great cultural importance – an indispensable book for all lovers of ballet.
In 1931, Ninette de Valois started a ballet company with just six dancers. Within twenty years, The Royal Ballet – as it became – was established as one of the world’s great companies. It has produced celebrated dancers, from Margot Fonteyn to Darcey Bussell, and one of the richest repertoires in ballet.
The company danced through the Blitz, won an international reputation in a single New York performance and added to the glamour of London’s Swinging Sixties. It has established a distinctive English school of ballet, a pure classical style that could do justice to the 19th-century repertory and to new British classics.
Leading dance critic, Zoë Anderson, vividly portrays the extraordinary personalities who created the company and the dancers who made such an impact on their audiences. She looks at the bad times as well as the good, examining the controversial directorships of Norman Morrice and Ross Stretton and the criticism fired at the company as the Royal Opera House closed for redevelopment.

‘This book is a MUST read for anyone curious and interested in the special origins and developments of Ballroom & Latin American dancing.’ – Marcus Hilton MBE, with Karen Hilton MBE nine times World Professional Ballroom champion
‘A fascinating book. Hilary French tells the history of dance from the very beginning. I learnt a lot and found it immensely interesting and insightful. If you are interested in dance and how we have got to where we are today, this is an essential read. ‘Hilary French’s pioneering book combines social history, economics, fashion, music, dance technique and architecture and design in an engaging mix … it blends scholarship with infectious enthusiasm.’- Professor Sir Christopher Frayling, Cultural Historian, Broadcaster and Former Rector of the Royal College of Art
In the early twentieth century, American ragtime and the Parisian tango fuelled a dancing craze in Britain. Public ballrooms were built throughout the country, providing a glamorous setting for dancing. The new English style, defined in the 1920s and followed by the films of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers in the 1930s, ensured that ballroom dancing continued to be the most popular British pastime until the 1960s, rivalled only by cinema.
This book explores the vibrant history of ballroom and Latin dancing: the dances, lavish venues, competitions and influential instructors. It also traces the decline of couple dancing and its resurgence in recent years with the hugely popular TV shows Strictly Come Dancing and Dancing with the Stars.Read more

Take a look.
It will inspire you and your dancing and it will
improve your choreography. When it comes to choreography, many
dancers are initially lost.
Nevertheless, there are people who can’t
dance and still develop great pieces.
Maybe you’re a gifted mover, but that
doesn’t mean that your material works in one
piece.Even if your movements are great and
others admire you for how you dance, it can
happen very quickly that the sensation of your
skills wears off very quickly and your movements
seem arbitrary. Especially if you have transferred
them to a group. And you ask yourself in such a
moment: What am I doing wrong? My dancers
are great, my movement material is innovative,
but on stage it all seems interchangeable and it’s
just movement. And you think: This is all
pointless. No, that’s not it! It’s about how you deal
with everything. How you connect the dancers
with your ideas and with your material. How you
manage that the dancers make your visions and
your movements theirs. How to get them there
to identify with what moves you. But even that is
not enough. You need to know more about how
dramaturgy works in dance. How you build up an
arc of suspense and what that has to do with
space and rhythm. How to create interesting
contrasts and how to deal with music and
movement. This book covers all of that. You can open
it anywhere and get inspiration for the rehearsal
or class and expand your thought space. But you
can also focus on certain topics such as music
and movement. You can delve deeper into the
work of thematic development and structuring
of access development. In total there are 120 studies and
exercises that you do not have to do one to one.
You can use the exercises as a suggestion and
develop them further in order to get on with
your dancing and choreography.Read more

Tchaikovsky: The Man Revealed
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky is one of the most successful composers that Russia has ever produced, but his path to success was not an easy one.A shy, emotional child, intended for the civil service by his father, Tchaikovsky came late to composing as a career, and despite his success he was a troubled character. Doubting himself at every turn, he was keenly wounded by criticism, while the death of his mother haunted him all his life, and his incessant attempts to suppress his homosexuality took a huge toll.
From his disastrous marriage to his extraordinary relationship with his female patron, his many amorous liaisons and his devotion to friends and family, Suchet shows us how the complexity of Tchaikovsky’s emotional life plays out in his music. A man who was by turns quick to laugh and to despair, his mercurial temperament found its outlet in some of the most emotionally intense music ever written.
Tchaikovsky: ¬The Man Revealed examines the complex and contradictory character of this great artist, long hidden behind sanitised depictions by his brother and the Russian authorities, and how he came to take his rightful place among the world’s greatest composers.

Dancing in Time: The History of Moving and Shaking
With a Foreword by Oti Mabuse.
Dance is at the heart of diverse cultures around the globe, from the increasing popularity of salsa clubs, to break dance battles that gather crowds in the street, to the constant stream of dance routines going viral on TikTok. Every Saturday from September to December, 8 million people tune in to watch Strictly Come Dancing.
But behind the glitzy performances are amazing and unpredictable histories: the shocking debut of the waltz in eighteenth-century Vienna; the power of African-American influence on the jive and Lindy hop; and the early foundations of hip-hop in funk and disco styles. Tango, samba, Charleston, cha cha cha, rumba – each dance has distinct rhythms, quality of movement and complex rules to learn and follow. But they all shook up society and gave ordinary people the freedom of self-expression.
Choreographer Robert Hylton navigates an extraordinary array of photographs, periodicals and ephemera from the British Library collections, which reveal the true origins of the popular dance styles that have, at one point or another, swept the population off their feet.
