  • Joe Wilkinson: My (Illustrated) Autobiography

    02

‘Joyfully absurd and hilarious.’ ADAM KAY

Here before you is Joe Wilkinson’s brilliantly absurd account of his time on – and briefly off – planet Earth.

Through cartoon stories (illustrated by Henry Paker) Joe recounts the defining moments and bizarre encounters of his life – from his schoolboy misfortunes to his formative years on the dating scene, to his money-making schemes and globetrotting adventures.

    With tall stories including…

    -Winning ‘most nits’ at school
-That time I threw a turd into a tornado
-Becoming the bad boy of fly tipping
    -The disastrous double date
    -My car airbag addiction
-The time I tunnelled too far out of prison and ended up in the prison next door
-The real reason Bigfoot went into hiding

…this book is a delightfully absurd journey into the mind of a comic maverick.

Hilarious, heart-warming and utterly unique, Joe Wilkinson: My Autobiography is the off-the-wall life story of one of our most beloved and unorthodox comedians.

  • John Gielgud: Matinee Idol to Movie Star (Biography and Autobiography)

    08
John Gielgud: Matinee Idol to Movie Star is the most authoritative and comprehensive account of the finest classical actor of the twentieth century. This entertaining but critical biography charts the ups and downs of Gielgud’s long and glittering career, from his young ground-breaking Hamlet to his later success in plays by Pinter, Storey, Bond and Bennett, and his recognition as a major movie star following his role in Arthur. It also reassesses his complex relationship with his great rival Laurence Olivier and throws fresh light on his personal relationships and the turbulent episodes of his private life that threatened to shatter his career.

For this biography Jonathan Croall’s exhaustive research has included over a hundred new interviews with key people from his life and career, including Peter Brook, Kenneth Branagh, Alec Guinness, Joan Plowright and Eileen Atkins, and it draws on several hundred letters to and from Gielgud that have never been published, including correspondences with Noël Coward, Somerset Maugham, Siegfried Sassoon, Edith Evans and Edward Gordon Craig. What emerges is an intimate, complex and often startling portrait of this great actor and much-loved man.

Gielgud’s interpretations of Shakespeare’s great roles made Shakespeare’s plays a commercial success on London’s West End for the first time. He was also hugely influential as a director and an actor-manager and worked extensively in film and television later in life. Since Jonathan Croall’s first biography of Gielgud was published in 2000 a considerable amount of new material has come to light and the result is a much more rounded, candid and richly textured portrait of this celebrated stage and screen actor.

  • Love, Dance and Ecstasy

Dionysos is the Greek god of the grape-harvest and winemaking, of the growth and fertility of vegetation – especially orchards and vineyards – and, lastly, of insanity, ritual madness, religious ecstasy, festivity and theatre. Because of his links to plant growth, he also became associated with death, resurrection and regeneration. He was also known as Bákkhos to the Greeks, a name adopted by the Romans as Bacchus. The focus here is on the links between Dionysos’ cult and the perennial human preoccupations of drugs, sex and ecstasy.

A WATERSTONES PAPERBACK OF THE YEAR 2023
A WATERSTONES BEST BOOK OF 2022: ENTERTAINMENT
A MAIL ON SUNDAYS BOOK OF THE YEAR 2022

Alan Rickman remains one of the most beloved actors of all time across almost every genre, from his breakout role as Die Hard’s villainous Hans Gruber to his heart-wrenching run as Professor Severus Snape, and beyond. His air of dignity, his sonorous voice and the knowing wit he brought to each role continue to captivate new audiences today.

But Rickman’s artistry wasn’t confined to just his performances. Rickman’s writing details the extraordinary and the ordinary in a way that is anecdotal, indiscreet, witty, gossipy and utterly candid. He takes us behind the scenes on films and plays ranging from Sense & Sensibility, the Harry Potter series, Private Lives, My Name Is Rachel Corrie and many more.

The diaries run from 1993 to his death in 2016 and offer insight into both a public and private life. Here is Rickman the consummate professional actor, but also the friend, the traveller, the fan, the director, the enthusiast: in short, the real Alan Rickman. Here is a life fully lived, all detailed in intimate and characteristically plain-spoken prose. Reading the diaries is like listening to Rickman chatting to a close friend.

Madly, Deeply also includes a foreword by Emma Thompson and a selection of Rickman’s early diaries, dating from 1974 to 1982, when his acting life first began.

  • Marilyn Monroe: A Photographic Life

    06
The camera loved Marilyn, and she loved it right back. In this luxurious volume, get to know the enigmatic star through iconic and rare photos, intimate stories, and removable memorabilia.

Everyone knows the classic photographs of Marilyn Monroe: in the dress she wore to John F. Kennedy’s birthday, or leaning out of a balcony over the streets of New York City, or famously standing over the subway grates while shooting The Seven Year Itch. Behind the glamour, we’ve also heard the sad stories: her mother’s institutionalization, her three failed marriages, her own struggles with mental health, her surprising death that still leaves us with questions.

Marilyn Monroe: A Photographic Life delves into the life of the star—before, during, and after she became a “Blonde Bombshell.” Born Norma Jeane Mortenson (the Baker came later), she had a troubled childhood that culminated in her self-described “inferiority complex.” But all the while, she dreamed of something more.

Read the stories behind her first marriage (and why she kept it secret when she started modeling), her early roles with the studios (and the one exec who thought she didn’t have “it”), and her life as a budding actress that include humble anecdotes (at one point, she was so poor that she and a roommate shared one pair of high heels—and whoever had a date that night got to wear them).

Along with the stories are fabulous rare photographs and reproductions of frameable memorabilia, such as:

    • Birth and marriage certificates
    • Handwritten letters
    • Certificate of conversion to Judaism before her marriage to Arthur Miller
    • Screen Actors Guild membership card
    • Picture of Marilyn sketched by Jane Russell
    • Watercolor Marilyn painted for JFK
    • Childhood photos
    • Shots and ads from her earliest modeling days
    • Wedding photos
    • Images of those who knew her, including Groucho Marx, Ella Fitzgerald, Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra, and so many more
    • Marilyn’s favorite image of herself, taken in 1956

Further chapters cover Marilyn’s marriages to Joe DiMaggio and Arthur Miller, her time in England and New York, and her rise as one of Hollywood’s most sought after starlets. Through it all—the self doubts, the illnesses, the isolation—we see Marilyn triumph with the help of friends and confidantes and her own tenacious will of knowing what she wanted.

We see time and again the depths of Marilyn’s heart and her capacity to care for others. “I want to love and be loved more than anything else in the world,” she once said, and with Marilyn Monroe: A Photographic Life, you can’t help but oblige.

Understand and formulate rigorous marketing strategies and differential advantage in today’s marketplace

Marketing Strategy and Competitive Positioning, 7th Edition, by Hooley, Nicoulaud, Rudd and Lee provides a deep understanding of the process of developing and implementing a rigorous marketing strategy. This book focuses on competitive positioning and includes in-depth discussions of the processes used within marketing to achieve competitive advantage in a business environment – by creating and sustaining superior performance in the marketplace. The key approach used in this book is to focus on two central issues in marketing strategy formulation – the identification of target markets, and the creation of a differential advantage. In doing so, it recognises the emergence of potential new target markets born of the recession, increased concern for climate change and disruption from ongoing technological advances. It helps you examine ways in which firms can differentiate offerings through recognition of environmental and social concerns and innovation.

  • Monologues for Kids and Tweens: 100 Original Comedy and Drama Monologues for Young Actors (The Young Actor Series)

    04
“The monologues are brilliant! And the best part, there’s one to fit every audition, no matter what….He’s created another excellent guide to help young actors master their craft.” – Suzanne Lyons, Producer, Snowfall Films

Does your child dream of being on television?
Are you determined that your child escapes the perils of early stardom?
Are you wondering how to get started?

Casting Director Michael Shurtleff, author of Audition, was famously quoted as saying, “The first step to a better audition is to give up character and use yourself.”

His student and talented character actor in his own right, Mike Kimmel, has translated that truth into a series of books that will help hone the skills of a young actor and help them understand how to handle and explore stage and film. Monologues for Kids and Tweens is a collection of 100 original comedy and drama scripts on a wide range of topics. Each piece may be performed by actors of any gender. No props or costumes are required.

As Eva C. Nusbaum says, ”These short pieces acknowledge – and rightly so – that kids live in imperfect families in an imperfect world.” They touch on:

    • loss (The Comfy Red Chair,)

    • consequences (Green Bananas,)

    • shame (Little People,)

    • duty (New Old Sneakers,)

    • nostalgia (Little Magic Donut Seeds

The monologues are clean, family-friendly, and include positive messages, life lessons, and ethical questions for young people written between the lines. These are monologues they’ll remember you by. Ultimately, these monologues can help parents and teachers encourage positive attitudes and behaviors in our young performers – and their classmates and audiences as well. Appropriate for film, television, and theater training and performance.

As Jack Klugman said, “Acting is a craft, and you must learn it.” Get started with The Young Actor Series and give your young artist the best chance of becoming a professional actor and a well-balanced, empathetic human being.

Praise for Monologues for Kids and Tweens

”Mike has a real gift for writing while keeping his monologues concise and memorable.” – Will Wallace, Director, Producer, Actor and Acting Coach

”It makes for a nce addition to any young actor’s “tool box.” – Nicole Connor, Talent Agent, Central Artists Talent Agency

”Finally, a monologue book that is introspective and yet able to be expressed believably through the art of a child.” – GiGi Erneta, Actress, Radio and TV Host

”Kimmel has crafted a great selection of pieces varying in tone and subject that are perfect for the young performer….It’s so refreshing to have a compilation of monologues that support good values and personal growth for the child’s development, both as an actor and as an empathetic human being.” – Misty Marshall, Executive Director, Empowerment thru Arts, Sony recording artist and American Idol semi-finalist

  • More than an Actor

    06

Well-bred, educated at Eton and the Central School for Speech and Drama in London, the youngest of four boys in an upper-class family, Peter H. was in many ways the embodiment of Englishness, from the way he took his tea to his love of Shakespeare. Encouraged by his wonderful mother, he chose a career in acting and, under the tutelage of Sir Laurence Olivier at the British National Theatre Company, became a stellar performer – a classical actor in the postwar era of gritty realism.

    W. Grey Champion’s narrative, relying on contemporary accounts of people who knew Peter, tells the haunting story of the man himself – beset by misfortune and tragedy, which aggravated mental and physical disorders ending his life too soon. The author withholds Peter’s stage name early on in order to accentuate his vision of a truly superlative person, who was much more than an actor.

A compelling imaginative read that pays tribute to the memory of the venerable Jeremy Brett (Peter Jeremy William Huggins). – Linda Pritchard

  • Music, Dance and Translation

How is music affected by its translation, interpretation and adaptation with, through, and by dance? How might notation of dance and music act as a form of translation? How does music influence the creation of dance? How might dance and music be understood to exchange and transfer their content, sense and process during both the creative process and the interpretative process? Bringing together chapters that explore theory and practice, this book questions the process and role translation has to play in the context of music and dance. It provides a range of case studies across this interdisciplinary field, and is not restricted by genre, style or cultural location. As one of very few volumes to explore translation in relation to music and to overtly tackle this topic in terms of dance, it moves the argument from a broad notion of text and translation, to think critically about the sound and movement arts of music and dance, using translation as a model to better understand the collaboration of these art forms.

  • My Autobiography (Penguin Modern Classics)

    08

A silent comedy star whose legendary slapstick routines are recognisable to this day, Charles ‘Charlie’ Chaplin’s My Autobiography is an incomparably vivid account of the life of one of the greatest filmmakers and comedians, with an introduction by David Robinson

As a child, Charlie Chaplin was awed and inspired by the sight of glamorous vaudeville stars passing his home, and from then on he never lost his ambition to become an actor. Chaplin’s film career as the Little Tramp adored by the whole world is the stuff of legend, but this frank autobiography shows another side. Born into a theatrical family, Chaplin’s father died of drink while his mother, unable to bear the poverty, suffered from bouts of insanity. From a childhood of grinding poverty in the south London slums, Chaplin found an escape in his early debut on the music hall stage, followed by his lucky break in America, the founding of United Artists with D.W. Griffith and Douglas Fairbanks, the struggle to maintain artistic control over his work, the string of failed marriages, and his eventual exile from Hollywood after personal scandals and persecution for his left-wing politics during the McCarthy Era.

Sir Charles ‘Charlie’ Chaplin (1895-1976) was born in Walworth, London. Best known for his work in silent film, his most famous role was The Little Tramp, a universally recognisable and iconic character who appeared in films such as The Kid (1921), The Gold Rush (1925) and City Lights (1931). His other films include Modern Times (1936), a commentary on the Great Depression, and The Great Dictator (1940), a satirical attack on Hitler and the Nazis.

If you enjoyed My Autobiography, you might like Andy Warhol’s The Philosophy of Andy Warhol, also available in Penguin Modern Classics.

  • NYC Ballet Fashion Gala: Choreography & Couture

Celebrating the dual art forms of ballet and fashion, this beautiful book explores the creative collaborations between the New York City Ballet and top fashion designers of our age, including Valentino, Dries Van Noten, and Olivier Theyskens among others. Ballet and fashion have long been intertwined. From its creation in seventeenth-century France, classical ballet adapted elements from high style including the ballerina s corseted bodice, tulle skirt, and pointe shoes. The world of fashion happily reciprocated, incorporating balletic style into day and evening wear, a trend that continues to this day. The interrelationship between these beautiful art forms is exemplified by the New York City Ballet s annual Fall Fashion Gala in which the company s young choreographers collaborate with prominent fashion designers on a newly commissioned ballet. From the first gala in 2012 when renowned choreographers Peter Martins and Christopher Wheeldon worked with Valentino, up through the present, the performances have become the most glamorous cultural event of the season with the biggest names in fashion bringing their artistic vision to a never-seen-before ballet. With stunning photography, this book features incredible images of the dancers in motion, with details highlighting their couture costumes. Richly illustrated, with the designers costume sketches complementing the photography, the book also features interviews between the dancers, choreographers and designers, as well as essays by noted fashion writers, illuminating the dynamic process of design and dance.
